The Greatest Sports Series of All Time Confirms a Brand New Release

The world of anime and manga is booming, but older shows often fade from memory as new ones appear. However, truly great stories tend to stick around, and one example is Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue, frequently hailed as the best sports series ever made. Inoue is a highly respected manga artist, also famous for his other works like Vagabond and Real. While all of his series are popular, Slam Dunk remains his most well-known – it ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996. Inoue is very careful about allowing adaptations of his work into anime, making it challenging for studios to gain his approval.

Because of his involvement, he played a key role in creating the Slam Dunk anime, and his choices clearly improved the final product. The series surprisingly returned in 2022 to animate the last parts of the manga. Even though the story concluded long ago, Slam Dunk remains incredibly popular worldwide, with fans eagerly anticipating new releases. Viz Media recently announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a deluxe hardcover edition of the manga will arrive in Spring 2027. This new edition will feature exclusive color pages, redesigned covers, and a reordered volume structure based on story arcs. Details about the release date and pre-order link will be announced soon.

What Is Slam Dunk About?

The story follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, a tall, red-haired high schooler determined to finally get a girlfriend. Unfortunately, his reputation as a troublemaker and his tendency to cause problems make it hard for him to connect with people. Haruko Akagi, unaware of his past, notices his height and asks if he plays basketball.

Hanamichi, flustered by a girl’s attention, surprisingly says he likes sports even though he actually despises them. Haruko sees his amazing natural athleticism and tells the basketball team captain about him. Soon, this former rebel is pulled into competitive basketball, despite wanting to avoid it at all costs. The series remains popular because of its realistic character development and satisfying ending—something that’s rare in many action manga.

I’m totally hooked on this story! It doesn’t go for the typical feel-good ending – it feels so much more real and raw. Watching Hanamichi transform from a troublemaker into a serious basketball player is seriously inspiring, and his goodbye? Absolutely amazing. For anyone wanting to read it, there are 31 volumes available, both as physical copies and digitally through Viz Media’s website. Plus, if you’re in the US, you can stream the anime on Prime Video! It’s a must-see.
