Matt Reeves has officially started working on the sequel to “The Batman”, titled “The Batman Part II”. This news brings excitement as it suggests that another highly anticipated film sequel by Reeves could be released soon. Reeves first ventured into DC with the 2022 release of “The Batman”, where Robert Pattinson portrayed Bruce Wayne’s Batman, facing off against Paul Dano’s Riddler in an alternate reality separate from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s primary DC Universe. “The Batman Part II” is set for a 2027 release in October, and many are eager to see what project Reeves will take on following his second Dark Knight venture.
After finishing work on “The Batman Part II”, Matt Reeves might move on to directing the long-awaited follow-up to the 2008 original “Cloverfield” movie next. Originally directed by Matt Reeves in 2008, following his earlier work on “The Pallbearer” from 1996, “Cloverfield” was produced by J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk, with a screenplay penned by Drew Goddard. The franchise has since expanded with standalone sequels like “10 Cloverfield Lane” and “The Cloverfield Paradox”, but in April 2018, J.J. Abrams confirmed that a direct sequel to the original “Cloverfield” is under development, and Matt Reeves has shown interest in revisiting the project.
2023 found me brimming with enthusiasm about potential future projects in the Cloverfield universe, as Matt Reeves shared with ComicBook. However, I can’t disclose specifics because that’s just how Cloverfield operates. To put it plainly, nothing is ever set in stone. Despite my genre-focused work, I always need to connect on a personal level. Cloverfield truly reflects my concerns… It’s not an impossibility, but I wouldn’t guarantee it. In 2022, Babak Anvari (known for films like Wounds and Hallow Road) was tapped to direct Cloverfield 4, but there’s still a chance I might be back.
In March of 2025, Anvari shared with “Countdown City Geeks” that “Cloverfield 4” is still being produced, hinting at something extraordinary. Though Anvari may be a committed director for the upcoming direct sequel, long-awaited by fans of the 2008 original who’ve had to wait 17 years, Matt Reeves might contribute as a writer or producer, reintroducing his skills and creative vision from the first film in the sequel. The 2018 release, “The Cloverfield Paradox,” aimed to connect the series’ diverse narratives, but faced criticism that the forthcoming film must address to rectify.
There’s been no word yet on when we can expect “Cloverfield 4” to hit theaters, but with Matt Reeves now working on “The Batman Part II,” there’s a good chance he’ll be available soon for the upcoming “Cloverfield” sequel. Keep in mind that past marketing strategies and release patterns suggest “Cloverfield 4” could surprise us out of nowhere, but it would certainly be exciting to see Reeves return to this franchise. Joe Barton, writer of “The Lazarus Project” and “The Union,” is penning the script for “Cloverfield 4.” The film will be a collaboration between Abrams’ Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures.
