Sally Wainwright explains in this week’s issue that she enjoys writing female characters because she believes they tend to be more expressive emotionally and face unique challenges due to historical and societal inequalities.
Suranne Jones consistently portrays strong, complex women, and her latest series is no different, featuring a punk band made up of women going through menopause. This builds on her previous work, like her memorable roles in shows such as *Scott & Bailey* and *Gentleman Jack*, and it’s clear she’s gained valuable experience from playing those characters.
Jodie Whittaker, who worked with Suranne Jones on *The Frauds*, praised Jones’ ability to create diverse roles for women. She explained that because Suranne Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor are creating their own projects, they’re not limited to just one female character – they’re building a whole range of complex roles for women of all ages.
This fall, we’re excited to see five new dramas created by and starring women, signaling real progress for female representation. It’s a great feeling to see things changing… though our editor, Shem, is noticeably absent! We’ve hidden a clue to his location somewhere in this week’s issue.
