Fans are hoping The Last of Us Part 3 will include a popular feature from the original game that was absent in Part 2. Currently, the game’s developer, Naughty Dog, is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is expected to release around mid-2027. While Naughty Dog hasn’t confirmed their next project, many believe it will be The Last of Us 3 due to the popularity of the first two games, the successful TV show, and hints from the studio. However, there’s also been some indication that the series is paused. This means Naughty Dog’s next game could also be a sequel to Intergalactic, the long-awaited Uncharted 5, or something completely different.
Recent rumors have been confirmed by a new job posting from Naughty Dog. The studio is starting work on a game for multiple platforms, meaning it will likely be released on both PlayStation and PC. The job listing, for a Senior Sound Designer, also specifically asks for experience with multiplayer games, strongly suggesting the new title will have a multiplayer component.
The Last of Us Factions
The original Last of Us game on PlayStation 3 included a multiplayer mode called Factions. While it wasn’t hugely popular, it did have a dedicated following. Many of those fans were disappointed that the sequel didn’t include any multiplayer option, and a planned standalone multiplayer game was ultimately cancelled.
If this surprise project turns out to be The Last of Us Part 3 – and that’s a big ‘if’ – it might mean the return of the Factions mode, or something similar. For now, though, everything is just guesswork.
The job posting mentioning multiplayer might suggest this isn’t for The Last of Us. Sony recently canceled a costly multiplayer game set in that world, so they’d likely be cautious about starting another one.
