It’s been a little over three years since the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us ended. The show, a popular adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation game, quickly became a fan favorite. Similar to the game that inspired it, the show has sparked some debate, particularly when it closely followed major story points. However, unlike the game where the story unfolds quickly, fans have faced a years-long wait for the third season, which is now in development.
There’s been a lot of talk online about Season 3 of The Last of Us, and now those rumors are being confirmed. Deadline reports that Patrick Wilson will be joining the HBO series, playing a significant role as Abby’s father, Dr. Jerry Anderson. For those familiar with the show, Dr. Anderson’s death at the hands of Joel Miller was the event that drove Abby’s quest for revenge in Season 2. This wasn’t the only update about the show, however.
Patrick Wilson Joins The Last of Us Season 3 as Abby’s Dad

Fans of The Last of Us game will remember Abby’s father, Jerry, playing a key role in revealing her past and the details of the Firefly mission in Salt Lake City. Through flashbacks, we see Jerry discussing the possibility of a cure based on Ellie’s immunity and sharing important moments with Abby, highlighting what she lost after Joel’s actions at the end of Season 1. While Wilson, who plays Jerry, may only appear in a few episodes of Season 3, he’s already familiar with the role. Let’s just hope Pedro Pascal doesn’t have to shoot him too much!
I’m so excited for Season 3 of The Last of Us! It’s not just about the new cast – Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord, who played Mel, Nora, and Owen, are all going to be series regulars! I know they all died in Season 2, but it makes total sense now. The show is going to be telling the story from Abby’s side, just like the game does. That means we’ll get to see so much more of these characters and really understand their motivations – it’s going to add a whole new layer to everything we’ve already seen, and I can’t wait!
Season 3 of The Last of Us has added Jason Ritter to the cast. He’ll be playing Hanley, a soldier from the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). This character isn’t in The Last of Us Part II video game, so it seems Hanley is original to the show, though he could be a previously unnamed character from the game. Interestingly, this isn’t Ritter’s first role in the series – he previously played a bloater (without receiving credit) in Season 1, in the same episode as his wife, Melanie Lynskey.
Work on Season 3 of The Last of Us seems to be starting soon, but it will probably be over a year before the new episodes air. While a start date hasn’t been announced, some important characters haven’t been confirmed to appear yet. There’s also uncertainty about how the season will be made, now that co-creator Neil Druckmann is no longer directly involved in production.
