In 1977, Star Wars revolutionized science fiction, crafting a captivating universe that continues to grow today through films, television series, books, comics, and other media. The newest film builds upon the popularity of The Mandalorian and launches a fresh story while also bringing a long-standing plot to a close.
When the original Star Wars movie came out, fans were left wondering about the character Jabba the Hutt. He’s been a recurring problem for many of the main characters ever since. Recently, The Mandalorian and Grogu effectively brought an end to the Hutt’s power, permanently changing the galaxy.
The Hutts Have Terrorized the Star Wars Universe for Decades
Most fans of Star Wars remember the Jedi, Sith, and the fight between the good guys and the Empire. While there are lots of smaller details within that larger story, it’s hard to think much beyond that central conflict. One of those often-overlooked details is the presence of criminal organizations who profited from the chaos. The most powerful of these groups in the Outer Rim was the Hutt Syndicate.
I remember hearing stories about Jabba the Hutt, the most feared crime lord on Tatooine. He was truly terrifying! I learned that he put a huge bounty on Han Solo, which ultimately led to Han being frozen in carbonite. The whole Hutt family seemed to cause trouble throughout the galaxy – from Jabba himself, to relatives like Ziro the Hutt and even the Hutt Twins we saw in The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s amazing – even after Jabba was gone, the Hutts still managed to stay powerful and influential.
It’s strange to think that such greedy and large creatures could be so feared, but the Hutts controlled the galaxy for a long time and faced almost no competition from other criminal organizations. Establishing that dominance wasn’t easy, and it took until The Book of Boba Fett for someone to finally take over after Jabba the Hutt died. Even this small event highlights just how much power a single Hutt could wield back then.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Quietly Ended Crime’s Deadliest Family
I remember when Rotta the Hutt first showed up in The Clone Wars – he was just a baby Hutt, Jabba’s son! Anakin and Ahsoka had to look after him, and we all wondered what he’d grow up to be like. Well, The Mandalorian and Grogu finally gave us the answer, and it’s pretty clear now what kind of Hutt Rotta became!
In the show, Din Djarin is hired by two Hutt brothers to complete a job on their home planet, Nal Hutta. They promise him information about an Imperial officer the New Republic is searching for. However, when he finds the young Hutt, Rotta, he realizes Rotta is a skilled fighter who doesn’t want to go back to his family. Returning home would actually be a death sentence for Rotta, as the Hutt twins want to keep their power over the criminal underworld.
Okay, so Din gets played, but then the Hutt Twins finally catch up to him and Rotta. That kicks off this crazy rescue mission – thankfully, Grogu comes through and saves Rotta! But things escalate fast. The New Republic steps in with a huge airstrike, completely wiping out the Hutts’ place. It’s intense, but Din, Rotta, and Grogu all make it out alive, though sadly, the Hutt Twins and everyone connected to them don’t survive the bombing.
The Hutt syndicate has been a constant presence in the Star Wars galaxy for many years, appearing almost unstoppable. However, the destruction of their home world and the choice of their last known family member to align with the New Republic signal its end. This also explains why no Hutts appeared in the sequel trilogy. The events in The Mandalorian and Grogu ultimately brought about the end of this criminal organization.
Beyond focusing on the Hutt family, the show introduces significant challenges for the wider galaxy and those who support the Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Created a Dangerous Power Vacuum
The fall of the Hutt crime syndicate is a huge moment for the galaxy far, far away – as significant as the defeat of the Empire. But this victory isn’t without its challenges. As seen in The Book of Boba Fett, the removal of Jabba the Hutt created a dangerous power struggle, and Boba Fett faced a tough fight to establish himself as the new leader.
The events of The Mandalorian and Grogu mirror what Boba Fett experienced, but on a much larger scale across the galaxy. With the Hutts’ power fading, the outer rim territories will likely face conflict as various groups try to fill the void. This is especially true for Tatooine, which has long been a target for criminal organizations.
Within the official Star Wars storyline, no major crime organization has ever been completely destroyed. Given how many powerful syndicates exist, the fall of one could easily cause widespread conflict, with groups like the Pykes battling for control. It’s funny to think all of this happened because of the actions of a single Mandalorian who is, at heart, a hero.
The galaxy has always been a dangerous place, but the recent fall of the Hutts has made it even more so. It’s unclear if we’ll see the consequences of Din Djarin’s actions, but it’s clear that the period after the original Star Wars trilogy is proving to be incredibly unstable. With the Empire defeated and now the Hutts gone, the galaxy is facing a level of chaos it hasn’t seen before.
