The MCU Officially Turns Daredevil Into Iron Man for the Second Time

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again once again positions Matt Murdock as a figure similar to Iron Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The season culminates in a significant shift for Murdock, as he publicly reveals his identity as Daredevil. He does this dramatically, presenting a case in court that forces Kingpin to understand the situation will lead to both of their downfalls. This results in Kingpin losing his position as mayor of New York City, but also leads to Murdock being arrested for Daredevil’s past actions.

People are drawing comparisons between this reveal and Tony Stark’s famous announcement that he was Iron Man back in 2008. Just like that pivotal moment, this scene is incredibly dramatic – Matt Murdock couldn’t help but reveal his secret. The impact is just as strong, and it reinforces the idea that Matt Murdock is becoming the small-screen equivalent of Iron Man, marking this as his second major reveal.

Daredevil Has Always Felt Like Marvel Television’s Iron Man

To see how things connect, we need to go back to 2015. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was already very successful in theaters, and Marvel wanted to expand its storytelling across different platforms. Marvel Television had begun creating spy-themed shows that added background to the MCU, and a deal with Netflix finally brought us Marvel TV series (though how closely they fit into the official storyline was often debated). The first season of Daredevil was the first of these shows, and it established the formula for everything that followed – much like Iron Man did for the movies.

It’s easy to forget just how risky Daredevil was when it first came out. Unlike the lighter tone of shows like those on The CW, Daredevil was gritty, intense, and often violent. The show moved at a deliberately slow pace, allowing for deep character development and exploration of complex ideas. The relationship between Kingpin and Daredevil was captivating, the fight scenes were beautifully done, and the show fully embraced its mature rating. Daredevil set the standard for all the Marvel shows on Netflix, and none of them quite lived up to it – even the upcoming Born Again series is aiming to recapture that same magic.

We saw a similar situation with the first Iron Man movie in 2008. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was a big risk, and Marvel wasn’t certain it would succeed. That’s why The Incredible Hulk, released the same year, feels so different. Once Iron Man proved to be a hit, Marvel built on that success, using it as a model for future films. Daredevil followed this same pattern: identify what resonates with audiences and then refine everything to improve upon it.

Now Daredevil Has Become a (Better) Iron Man

The recent finale of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 highlights striking similarities to the ending of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Both conclude with a character’s secret identity being exposed, but Daredevil‘s reveal feels more impactful. Unlike Tony Stark, Matt Murdock faces real consequences for his actions. This difference is partly because Daredevil has been active as a vigilante for many years, while Iron Man was just starting out. Additionally, Stark’s wealth allowed him to easily resolve the issues caused by his reveal, something Murdock doesn’t have the luxury of.

Most superheroes hide their identities not just to avoid consequences, but to keep their families safe – as seen when Spider-Man revealed his identity and his aunt was attacked. Iron Man, however, was too focused on himself to worry much about protecting those close to him, though he had the means to do so. Daredevil, on the other hand, doesn’t feel the need to hide anymore. His only loved one, Karen, is already so connected to his Daredevil persona that she’d likely be a target regardless. Ultimately, Matt Murdock has little left to lose except his freedom.

The third season of Daredevil: Born Again will focus on what happens after Daredevil’s secret identity is revealed. While Tony Stark became famous and wealthy from his reveal, and just had to deal with a few Senate hearings, Matt Murdock has been thrown in jail for Daredevil’s actions. He’s now imprisoned with the same agents he previously exposed for their crimes, meaning his time in jail will likely be very difficult. Despite being blind and a lawyer, Matt is still a skilled fighter and should be able to protect himself.
