Mysteries are always popular with audiences, and while science fiction often gets more attention, classic whodunits remain a favorite, especially in movie form. Recently, this genre has seen a resurgence, largely thanks to the success of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films starring Daniel Craig. However, one mystery stands out as perhaps the most iconic of all. Released 40 years ago, it’s still a must-see movie and is now available to stream for free on Tubi.
The mystery movie Clue, released in 1985, is a truly unique film and a cornerstone of the genre. Based on the classic board game, it boasts a fantastic cast including Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, Christopher Lloyd, and Tim Curry. What’s really unusual is that when it first came out, theaters were given one of three different endings at random, meaning audiences saw different versions of the movie. Though it wasn’t a box office success initially, Clue has since gained a devoted following and is now considered a cult classic and a benchmark for mystery films. Later home video releases would allow viewers to see all three endings.
Clue Isn’t Just a Mystery Film; It’s a Campy Comedy That Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously
Okay, so Clue seems pretty straightforward at first – it’s a classic murder mystery! As a huge fan of the board game (and Agatha Christie, honestly!), I loved how the movie took that game’s setup – which itself came from those old-fashioned parlor games – and ran with it. The movie brings together six total strangers for a dinner party at this creepy New England mansion, and it quickly turns out they all have a secret connection to this guy, Mr. Boddy, who’s been blackmailing them. Things get crazy when the butler, Wadsworth, tries to call the police on Boddy, and Boddy threatens to reveal everyone’s secrets. Then, he dramatically lays out all the weapons – you know, the classic ones from the game! – and basically dares someone to kill Wadsworth. The lights go out, there’s a gunshot, and when they come back on, Boddy’s dead! So now everyone’s a suspect, the police are coming, and nobody wants to own up to what happened. It’s a brilliant setup!
Although the movie starts as a classic mystery, it’s the way the story unfolds that truly makes Clue special. The witty dialogue and clever wordplay perfectly capture the feel of the original board game – something many movie adaptations of games and toys fail to do. By consistently maintaining that playful, game-like spirit, Clue feels like a farcical comedy. In many ways, it’s similar to films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun – it’s packed with smart humor and physical comedy, but also playfully pokes fun at the mystery genre itself. Everything is exaggerated for comedic effect, and the fantastic performances make the whole experience even better.
Clue Continues to Be Influential Decades Later

Even years later, the movie Clue still inspires filmmakers. If you’ve seen all three Knives Out films, you’ll definitely notice similarities, and a Clue TV series is currently in development at Peacock. Though details are limited, it’s expected to capture the same fun spirit as the original movie. While we wait for the series or the next Knives Out installment, you can enjoy Clue for free on Tubi.
