Everyone agrees that Jaws is the most important and influential shark movie ever made. Released in 1975, Steven Spielberg’s hit film launched a whole wave of shark horror movies that are still popular today. While many films have tried to replicate Jaws’ success over the years, few have achieved similar recognition, though one 1999 shark film recently found a new home on a streaming service.
Renny Harlin’s action-packed sci-fi horror film, Deep Blue Sea, became available on Tubi on November 1st. While it was initially criticized for being over-the-top and predictable, the movie has gained a following. It’s about scientists at a remote underwater lab who are trying to find an Alzheimer’s cure, but end up battling incredibly smart, genetically modified mako sharks. Currently, it has a 60% rating from critics and a 40% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Deep Blue Sea Is Better Than You Remember
While Deep Blue Sea doesn’t reach the iconic status of Jaws and probably won’t become a classic shark movie, it’s been unfairly criticized. Ultimately, it’s a fun, if somewhat silly, monster movie with plenty of memorable and over-the-top scenes, and it’s actually a surprisingly well-made film.
Deep Blue Sea is a highly entertaining movie that delivers exactly what it promises. The story – about scientists genetically engineering super-intelligent sharks that turn the tables on them – is thrilling, funny, and full of suspense. It’s packed with memorable action sequences, like LL Cool J’s character, Preacher, riding a shark, a tense scene involving an oven, and a dramatic helicopter chase. The film uses a combination of practical effects and CGI that still looks good today, creating a truly exciting experience.
Deep Blue Sea successfully blends thrills and humor, offering both frightening moments and plenty of laughs. It’s a delightfully cheesy monster movie that remains enjoyable even now. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews (a 40% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), the film has gained a dedicated and well-deserved cult following and led to two fun sequels.
What’s New on Tubi?
As a movie buff, I was happy to see Deep Blue Sea join the lineup on Tubi starting November 1st. It’s just one of several great films the streaming service added recently. You’ll also find classics like The Godfather and Titanic, along with more recent favorites like No Country for Old Men and action-packed titles like Face/Off. And if you’re in the mood for some shark action, Deep Blue Sea is definitely worth a watch!
