Jerry Zucker, along with the late Jim Abrahams and David Zucker, created what is still considered one of the greatest parody films ever: ‘Airplane!’ (1980). It brilliantly spoofed the disaster movies of the 1970s, particularly those centered around airports. The film remains incredibly funny and re-watchable, packed with both witty dialogue and visual gags – you can still discover new jokes even after many viewings. They followed this success with the often-overlooked ‘Top Secret!’ and then another major hit, ‘The Naked Gun.’ Interestingly, ‘The Naked Gun’ came about because their TV series, ‘Police Squad!’, was cancelled before completing its run. The resulting film, starring the late Leslie Nielsen in a career-defining role, was a huge success in 1988, earning $78 million, though its two sequels weren’t quite as popular. This work heavily influenced Seth MacFarlane, who, over 35 years later, has produced a remake featuring Liam Neeson as the bumbling Lieutenant Drebin and Pamela Anderson as the alluring Beth Davenport. The remake, ‘The Naked Gun,’ is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD.
Now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD, this film marks a bit of a shift for Liam Neeson. Like Leslie Nielsen before him, Neeson was primarily a dramatic actor until the success of ‘Taken’ turned him into an action star. Though he’d seemed to move away from action roles, he was convinced to try comedy, following in Nielsen’s footsteps by playing the part with a completely serious demeanor. For Nielsen, this type of role, while defining his career, unfortunately meant he was never again seen as a serious dramatic actor. But times have changed, and Neeson does a great job as the son of Frank Drebin. He’s done comedy before, appearing in Seth MacFarlane’s ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ (2014), but this ‘Naked Gun’ remake is even better. It successfully captures the spirit and style of the original with its classic slapstick and silly humor. In a time when many movies are dark and serious, this film offers a delightfully dumb and refreshing escape, and audiences clearly agreed, with the film earning $102 million at the box office.
The Naked Gun is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD for home viewing, giving you another chance to catch all the jokes you might have missed in theaters. The release includes a variety of bonus features.

While the behind-the-scenes features are standard promotional material, the deleted scenes, alternate takes, and extended footage are definitely worth watching. Some cuts were clearly necessary, but several of the alternate versions are just as good as what made it into the final film. The blooper reel also includes a funny line from Liam Neeson. It’s a shame the disc doesn’t include a commentary track featuring director Akiva Schaffer with Neeson and Pamela Anderson.
Beyond that, the film is a great reminder of something we’ve been missing in movies lately: a genuinely funny comedy that makes you laugh out loud.
