If you had your hopes set on a new game in the Dead Space series, you might be out of luck.
Chuck Beaver, who used to write and produce games for EA’s popular sci-fi horror series, doesn’t think we’ll see another game in the franchise anytime soon.
In an interview on the FRVR podcast, he explained that despite having a dedicated fanbase, Dead Space isn’t selling enough copies to make another game financially viable. He stated simply, “the numbers just aren’t there.”
Honestly, when Dead Space 3 wrapped up and we didn’t see any more games for a while, it didn’t feel like a total rip-off to me. I know a lot of the developers and fans were bummed, but the series definitely had a good run. We got a lot of playtime out of it, so it wasn’t like it just ended abruptly with nothing to show for it.
It’s frustrating that we couldn’t finish the series as fans hoped, but after years of producing, I get it. I understand the financial realities, which is why Motive wasn’t given the go-ahead for any new projects after the remake.
The remake was well-received by critics and most players praised the changes made by the development team, Motive. However, sales weren’t strong enough for EA to justify continuing the series with another game.
Horror games have limitations in terms of sales needed to justify continued development. According to Beaver, when Frank Gibeau was at EA, Dead Space needed to sell around 5 million copies to remain viable. Now, due to increased development costs, that number is closer to 15 million.
He believes a new Dead Space game would need to sell at least 7 million copies to be successful, roughly in line with the sales figures of a Resident Evil game, which would have a comparable level of development cost.
He notes that Resident Evil games typically sell around seven million copies, which is a strong performance. However, companies today are searching for the next massive hit like Fortnite – a game that consistently generates revenue over a long period. He believes a traditional, single-player game without ongoing live service elements is becoming outdated, comparing it to a relic of the past.
While some single-player horror games, like Resident Evil, successfully create a scary experience, Dead Space doesn’t quite reach that same level of effectiveness.
