Despite promotional claims about 2025 being a big year for Obsidian, the studio has acknowledged they don’t want to release three games within a year again. Unfortunately, two of those games – the fantasy RPG Avowed and the space-themed RPG The Outer Worlds 2 – didn’t sell as well as Microsoft expected. Currently, Obsidian is interested in expanding the fantasy world of Eora, but they aren’t planning a third Outer Worlds game.
According to a Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier, Obsidian Entertainment is re-evaluating its game development process after two recent RPGs didn’t meet sales expectations. Studio head Feargus Urquhart stated they’re considering how much time and money they invest in projects. It appears they’ve already decided to shorten development timelines, aiming for three to four years instead of the six years it took to create both Avowed and The Outer Worlds.
The studio also aims to avoid releasing games too close together. According to design director Josh Sawyer, spreading out releases helps the team manage its workload and avoid burnout. Releasing multiple games in a single year usually indicates problems during development.
After releasing several large RPGs, including Grounded 2, Obsidian Entertainment is now planning to spend the next few years developing new, unannounced games while also continuing to work on updates and additions for both The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Obsidian Entertainment intends to continue developing games set in the world of Eora, which includes Awowed and Pillars of Eternity. The future of The Outer Worlds is less clear; the report states that Obsidian isn’t currently working on a third game in that series. I’ve contacted Obsidian to clarify whether this means they have no plans for a third Outer Worlds game at all, or if they’re simply not working on it right now.
I’d be a little sad if The Outer Worlds series ended here, even though I enjoyed Avowed more. I still believe Obsidian could create something truly great with another game in the series, whether it continues the story in New Vegas or goes in a completely new direction.
