The Outer Worlds PS4, Xbox One Owners Locked Out of Free Spacer’s Choice Edition Upgrade

Obsidian Entertainment promised owners of The Outer Worlds a free upgrade to The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. However, players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been upset because they’re being asked to purchase the game’s expansions to get the upgrade, despite the initial announcement. A Reddit user recently pointed out that the official upgrade requirements, as stated in a studio forum post, appear to have been altered.

A Reddit user pointed out that Obsidian initially stated anyone who purchased the original Outer Worlds before May 27th would receive the Spacer’s Edition for free on that date. However, Obsidian has since changed plans, and now players will need to purchase both DLC packs to get the full experience.

Obsidian previously stated that players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One would need to purchase the expansions separately to upgrade. However, they clarified that this requirement wouldn’t begin until after May 27th. Players who already owned the original game would receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade automatically and for free.

Obsidian Entertainment has apologized to fans of The Outer Worlds and explained that a recent problem is due to unexpected technical restrictions with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

“Apologies for the confusion,” wrote Obsidian. “Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade.”

So, Obsidian just dropped news about an upgrade for The Outer Worlds called Spacer’s Choice Edition a little while ago, and they hinted there’s even more coming for the game! Along with the announcement, they pushed out an update to get everything ready for future content and squashed a few bugs while they were at it. It’s good to see they’re still supporting the game!

The upcoming Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition will include several improvements, such as better performance, gameplay tweaks, and quest fixes. It will also add content that was missing from the original game, like new types of grenades.

While the recent update improved the game, it also means the original version of The Outer Worlds is no longer available for purchase on Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you don’t already own the original, the only way to play now is to buy the Spacer’s Choice Edition.

When The Outer Worlds first came out on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, opinions were divided. Our review gave it a 6 out of 10, mostly because of problems with the shooting, how choices impacted the game, and a strange character leveling system. We did enjoy its art style, the way the game world was created, and how companions developed, though.

Obsidian Entertainment has also launched The Outer Worlds 2. You can find our full review of the game here.
