Although a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was scrapped, a popular new Netflix series is already carrying on its legacy. Buffy left a huge mark on pop culture, much like other ‘90s hits such as Twin Peaks and The X-Files. The original series influenced many shows that followed, inspiring them to combine crime or investigative elements with supernatural themes.
Many popular shows like Grimm, Lucifer, Evil, Supernatural, and even Once Upon a Time, Wednesday, and Riverdale likely wouldn’t exist without Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s why the recent cancellation of the planned Buffy reboot is so disappointing. However, the Netflix series KPop Demon Hunters has the potential to fill the void. It shares a similar mix of fantasy, horror, compelling characters, and a focus on strong women, making it a strong candidate to become the next iconic series like Buffy.
KPop Demon Hunters Is An Ideal Buffy the Vampire Slayer Replacement

Coming out in 2025, KPop Demon Hunters is a fun, animated fantasy film with a really interesting idea. During the day, the K-pop group Huntrix juggles the demands of being pop stars – touring, making music, and managing their lives. But at night, they secretly fight demons! Their biggest challenge? A rival boy band called Saja Boys, who are actually demons disguised as people. The story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey is clever, but what really makes the movie work is its perfect blend of humor and excitement.
Similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, KPop Demon Hunters is lighthearted, funny, and entertaining, despite dealing with genuinely scary supernatural elements. The film takes both its monsters and the characters’ personal struggles seriously, but still delivers an empowering and optimistic message that has appealed to audiences worldwide. Upon its release, KPop Demon Hunters quickly broke streaming records, gained widespread praise, and ultimately won Best Animated Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards.
KPop Demon Hunters Will Almost Certainly Spawn Spinoffs Like Buffy Did

Similar to the way Buffy the Vampire Slayer felt in the late 90s, KPop Demon Hunters is fresh, smart, and offers intriguing hints of a larger mythology to explore in future stories. Like Buffy, it’s also set up perfectly for spinoffs – sequels, TV series, and more. Just as Buffy did, this movie creates a rich world with the potential to expand through comics, novels, and other related content for years to come.
Just like other installments, KPop Demon Hunters only hinted at the deeper story possibilities within the franchise. There’s a lot more potential for future stories, and it’s doubtful the franchise will stick to just movies. In fact, KPop Demon Hunters could even lead to a TV series, which would make its similarities to Buffy the Vampire Slayer even more apparent.
