The upcoming special just added an Academy Award-winner to its already star-studded crew list.

In a recent interview with Brandon Davis, Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, provided an update on the upcoming *Punisher* special. He shared that the project is currently in post-production, noting that it was written by Jon Bernthal and Rei Green (who also directed), and filmed by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit. Winderbaum described the special as a ‘beautiful piece’ with outstanding performances by Jon Bernthal.

Robert Elswit’s career in film and television dates back to 1980 with *CBS Library*. He’s worked on numerous projects, including TV series like *Dream Street* and *Human Target*, made-for-TV movies such as *A Killing in a Small Town* and *Steel Magnolias*, and feature films from 1981’s *The End of August* to Ben Affleck’s upcoming *Animals*. He’s particularly known for his long-standing working relationship with director Paul Thomas Anderson, having collaborated on films like *Hard Eight*, *Boogie Nights*, *Magnolia*, *Punch-Drunk Love*, *There Will Be Blood*, and *Inherent Vice*. Elswit received his first Academy Award in 2007, and had previously been nominated in 2005 for *Good Night, and Good Luck*.

Reinaldo Marcus Green directs this special, which was co-written with Jon Bernthal, who also returns to star. The story will connect to the events of *Daredevil: Born Again*, focusing on Frank Castle’s ongoing conflict with the Gnucci crime family. Joining Bernthal is Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle, a veteran and close friend of Castle who now leads a support group after losing a leg in service.

Ma Gnucci first appeared in the comic *Punisher* #4 in 2000, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. She was the small but incredibly powerful leader of the Gnucci crime family, which controlled a large part of New York City at its peak. Ma Gnucci had the mayor and police commissioner under her influence, allowing her to build a vast criminal network while the Punisher was out of town. When the Punisher returned, his efforts to dismantle her organization prompted Ma Gnucci to send numerous mercenaries and assassins after him. Ultimately, the Punisher destroyed the entire Gnucci empire, including Ma Gnucci herself. Readers recently saw evidence of the Gnucci family’s influence in an image released in July.

Marvel Studios’ Punisher special is currently expected to arrive on Disney+ some time in 2026.
