The Rookie Is Just the Latest TV Show to Crush Us With a Shocking Exit

It’s a beautiful day to save lives. Or at least it would be.

After hearing that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are leaving Grey’s Anatomy, and with rumors suggesting another main cast member might also be departing, plus Noah Wyle’s comments that more actors from The Pitt could follow Supriya Ganesh out of the show, watching a key character die on The Rookie felt especially painful.

In the second-to-last episode of season eight, Bridget Regan’s character, Monica Stevens, a dishonest lawyer, was killed in a shooting on a Los Angeles highway.

Honestly, when she finally went home, I wasn’t even shocked! I was just so impressed she made it as far as she did. I always figured, playing such a risky game for so long, eventually it was bound to catch up with her, you know? Like playing with fire – it’s amazing she didn’t get burned sooner, really!

The character has faced danger and trouble repeatedly. As Regan described it, she’s not just lucky – she’s incredibly resilient, having survived numerous attempts on her life, imprisonment, and even a near-fatal accident.

Still, the exit cuts deeps.

Regan was struck by how deeply she felt for Monica’s fate. It wasn’t just that the character died, but that she never managed to overcome her struggles and ultimately gave in to negativity, unable to find redemption.

She explained that she imagined another version of herself – a Monica who could have achieved different things, but never quite managed to. She felt that this unfulfilled potential was the most painful part of the story.

As a longtime TV watcher, I’ve noticed we’re all pretty accustomed to feeling heartbroken when a favorite character leaves a show. Regan’s exit is just the latest in a string of departures that have definitely tested our patience – and maybe even led to a few remote-throwing incidents! It’s become part of the TV experience, sadly.

To assuage our sorrow, we’re pouring one out for all the characters we’ve lost.

Bridget Regan, who plays Monica Stevens on The Rookie, revealed her character has a history of surviving dangerous situations. “She’s escaped being murdered multiple times, gone to prison, and even been thrown into a woodchipper,” Regan told TV Insider, reflecting on Monica’s four seasons on the show.

Regan said she wasn’t shocked when the attorney’s character died in an April 2026 episode. She felt it was a fitting end, acknowledging the character had been on the show for four years and expressed only thankfulness for the run.

Samira Mohan is leaving the show The Pitt. According to Variety, actress Supriya Ganesh won’t be back for the third season of the HBO Max drama.

Fans aren’t surprised by the character’s departure, as it’s been established that he was planning to move to a new hospital for his residency.

In a March 2026 episode, the crime drama said farewell to Director Leon Vance, portrayed by Rocky Carroll, after 18 years with the show, beginning in season five. The 500th episode featured Vance’s death in a shootout with a dishonest agent, and a touching scene where he was greeted in heaven by the late Chief Medical Examiner, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, played by Adam Campbell.

Fans were surprised in 2025 to learn that Mehcad Brooks was leaving the NBC crime show before its 25th season.

Brooks, who joined the show in 2022, portrayed Detective Jalen Shaw for three seasons.

After almost 20 years playing their roles as Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver have announced they are leaving the medical drama. Their last episode will be the season 22 finale on May 7, 2026, which surprised many fans.

Jenna Lyons has confirmed she won’t be back for season 16 of The Real Housewives of New York City.

Confirming the speculation, the former J. Crew Creative Director announced on Instagram on November 21st that she would be joining season 16 of RHONY as a ‘friend of.’ She explained that because of the private nature of her personal life, they had agreed this role was a good fit.

Okay, so you know how Sonja Morgan joined Real Housewives of New York a couple of seasons ago? Well, she basically just told me – I mean, she told everyone, but I felt like she was telling me – that she quickly realized being just a friend of the Housewives wasn’t cutting it for her. She needed to be fully involved, you know? It just wasn’t the same being on the sidelines!

After careful consideration, I’ve decided not to return to the show,” she explained. “I’d be the oldest contestant and the only openly gay woman, and I think it’s a good time to let a new perspective come in.

After nine seasons, the A-list realtor is done selling mega-mansions on the Netflix reality show.

In November, Chrishell shared on social media that she no longer needs the show for income. She explained that she’s fortunate to have other work and that continuing with the show was negatively affecting her well-being.

Jax Taylor has said he won’t be back for season three of The Valley. This decision comes after fans expressed concerns about his actions during the show’s second season.

I was really touched by what Jax said back in July 2025. He explained that right now, he needs to prioritize getting and staying sober, working on his mental health, and being a good coparent to Cruz, especially with everything going on with his divorce from Brittany. He truly believes taking this time to focus on himself is the best thing he can do, not just for him, but for their son. It’s good to see him putting family and his well-being first.

I’m absolutely devastated! It feels like everyone I adore on Saturday Night Live is leaving all at once! Seriously, within just a few days, so many of my favorite cast members announced they won’t be back for Season 51. It’s like they’re all abandoning me! I’m honestly heartbroken about it.

Longfellow and Walker each spent three seasons on SNL while Wakim exited after just one season.

Following the departures of Longfellow, Walker, and Wakim from Saturday Night Live, Gardner and Nwodim, both popular cast members, also announced they wouldn’t be back for season 51. Gardner had been with the show for eight seasons, and Nwodim for seven.

Sofia Mattsson finished her role on the long-running soap opera in the summer of 2025 after seven years as Sasha Gilmore. Her character moved to Paris as part of the storyline.

Tracy Ifeachor, who starred in the popular HBO Max series The Pitt, has left the show after its successful first season.

The actress shared on Instagram on July 10th how honored she was to play Dr. Heather Collins in what she called a truly special season of the show. She also thanked viewers for watching and sharing their personal experiences with her.

Even though fans likely expected Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, to die – his fate in April 2025 mirrored events from The Last of Us Part II, the video game the second season of The Last of Us is based on – the shocking way his character was killed still came as a surprise.

Pascal, known for also being killed off in shows like Game of Thrones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, wasn’t too upset about his character’s fate. He jokingly told Entertainment Weekly, “I get killed a lot. I actually enjoy it!”

Following what he called a “wild adventure,” Peter Krause finished his run as Captain Bobby Nash on the drama series 9-1-1 with an episode airing in April 2025.

According to a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, the character Bobby Nash was intentionally created to make a powerful sacrifice, reflecting the bravery of real-life first responders. Creator Ryan Krause explained that the character’s storyline is meant to honor those who put their lives on the line to save others.

Okay, so I’m still reeling, honestly! But I get what showrunner Tim Minear told Variety. Killing off that firefighter… it hurt, but he’s right. After eight seasons, things were getting a little too safe, you know? He said they needed to actually make us feel something real, and that meant someone important had to go. It was brutal, but if they want the show to have any weight going forward, I guess it had to happen. Still doesn’t make it easy though!

Summer just got a little less fun.

In June 2025, Paige DeSorbo revealed she was leaving the Bravo series after being on the show for seven seasons.

After sharing seven summers with you all, I’m so thankful for the memories, the support, and everything this journey has given me,” the Giggly Squad podcast host announced on Instagram. “But it’s time to move on to new things – every story has to come to an end, even the ones with a few bumps along the way.

The popular Netflix show won’t have the French actress in its fifth season, which is set to release in April 2025.

In an Instagram post on April 23rd, the actress announced she’s leaving Emily in Paris. She shared photos with her former co-stars and described her time on the show as a fantastic experience full of growth, creativity, and cherished memories.

Before the third season of The Sex Lives of College Girls begins, Reneé Rapp has announced she’s leaving the show.

I moved to LA thanks to the show College Girls and met some of my closest friends through it,” she shared on social media in July 2023. “After two and a half years, it’s brought me all of you and this amazing community.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m hearing the news about Reneé Rapp leaving ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls,’ and it’s bittersweet! Mindy Kaling, one of the show’s creators, shared how much they adore Reneé and will miss her character, Leighton Murray. But they’re also incredibly excited for her and fully supportive of her blossoming music career – and can’t wait to see her shine on tour! It’s lovely to see creatives supporting each other’s dreams.

After over a year of speculation, Kevin Costner confirmed in June 2024 that he won’t be returning for the fifth and final season of the popular Paramount drama. Rumors had circulated that he unexpectedly left the show after four and a half seasons.

In February 2023, Ellen Pompeo finished her run as Meredith Grey on the ABC drama after playing the role for 19 years.

Pompeo said on The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2022 that she needed to try new things. ‘I’m 53, and my brain feels a little scattered,’ she explained. ‘I need to challenge myself – you can’t just do the same thing, like The New York Times crossword, every day.’ Even though she’s already been back for a guest appearance in May, and continues to narrate the series, she felt the need for a change.

But she’s not gone for good. Pompeo still pops in and out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Henry Cavill, known for playing Superman and Batman, has announced he’s leaving the Netflix series after its third season. Liam Hemsworth will take over the role of Geralt, starting with season four and likely continuing in future seasons.

Okay, so, I’m absolutely devastated, but Henry Cavill – the Geralt – posted on Instagram back in October 2022, and he said his time playing Geralt of Rivia has been incredible, full of monsters and amazing adventures. But… he’s handing in the medallion and putting away the swords after Season 3. Seriously, he’s stepping down! It’s like he’s saying goodbye to the character, and honestly, it breaks my heart.

Jesse Lee Soffer, an original cast member, left the show in 2022 after playing Detective Jay Halstead for 10 seasons.

Everyone involved with the show has put a lot of heart and effort into making each week’s episode, and I’m incredibly proud of my time playing Detective Jay Halstead,” said Soffer after his last appearance on the NBC show on October 5th.

After five seasons, Damian Lewis departed Showtime’s Billions in Oct. 2021.

In August 2021, Emily VanCamp left the TV show The Resident on Fox, meaning she would no longer be playing her role as a doctor.

Madeleine Mantock, who played Macy on the CW’s Charmed reboot, decided to leave the show after three seasons. She announced her departure in 2021, calling the experience a great honor and expressing her appreciation for the show’s talented team, including the producers, writers, and cast.

As a huge fan of The Blacklist, I was really heartbroken when Megan Boone decided to leave the show. It meant we’d never get to see Elizabeth Keen finally uncover the truth about who Raymond Reddington really is. Her character was killed off right before she could read that crucial letter! It was so sad to see Liz’s story end in 2021, but Megan shared on Instagram that being part of the show was a “dream,” which was lovely to hear, even amidst the disappointment.

As a huge Bridgerton fan, I was absolutely gutted when I heard Rege-Jean Page – who totally stole the show in season one – wouldn’t be back for season two. It was a real shock, especially since he became such a breakout star with the show’s initial success on Netflix back in 2021!

You know, people often ask me about how I got my start. Honestly, it’s pretty straightforward. I took on a project, completed it, and then just kept taking on more. That’s really all there is to it! I always feel a little pressure to have a more exciting story, but it’s true – it wasn’t some grand, elaborate plan, just consistent work. I wish it was more glamorous to tell you, but that’s the simple truth.

Ruby Rose first appeared as Batwoman (Kate Kane) in a 2018 Arrowverse event and then led the CW’s Batwoman series for one season, becoming the first openly lesbian superhero to star in her own show. She announced her departure from the series just two days after the first season ended in 2020. Javicia Leslie later took on the role of Ryan Wilder, a new character who would become the next Batwoman in season two.

Later on in season two, Kate got a bit of a face swap and returned played by Wallis Day.

America Ferrera left the show Superstore after its fifth season in 2020, which meant both a change for the Cloud 9 store and a major loss for the series. Although she made a brief appearance in the first two episodes of season six due to the pandemic, she ultimately returned for the show’s final episode to give her character, Amy, and Jonah (Ben Feldman) a satisfying conclusion to their story.

In the last episode of season four of the Syfy show The Magicians, Jason Ralph’s character, Quentin, successfully rescued Eliot (played by Hale Appleman), but died in the process. Although the show often features characters dying—it is called The Magicians—Ralph didn’t appear in the fifth and final season.

Ahead of the final season, Arrow‘s Emily Bett Rickards announced her exit in a poem of sorts.

Felicity and I are very close, but after the seventh episode, we’ll be leaving the show,” she wrote.

She did, however, return for a guest appearance in the show’s 2020 series finale.
