Now that season 8 of The Rookie has finished airing in the US (with new episodes still being released each week in the UK), we’ve received an update about the show’s ninth season, which has already been confirmed.
During ABC’s announcement of its fall TV lineup, Ari Goldman, a senior vice president at the network, indicated that fans will have to wait until mid-season – around early 2027 – to see the new season of The Rookie.
Since it first aired, “The Rookie” traditionally premiered in the fall. However, due to the writers’ strike in 2024, the show shifted to a midseason release starting with its sixth season. It continued to air during the midseason for both seasons seven and eight.
Goldman explained that recent successes with shows like Will Trent and The Rookie demonstrate a desire to let viewers enjoy series with minimal interruptions throughout the season. They’ve found that allowing viewers to watch without breaks leads to better engagement.
I’m really excited about our plans for the rest of the year! Looking at the ABC schedule, with big events like New Year’s Rockin’ Eve leading right into the College Football Playoff, the Grammys, the Oscars, and of course the Super Bowl, we’ve got incredible opportunities. I truly believe we’re building some fantastic momentum heading into 2027 and can bring the show back stronger than ever.

Goldman explained that the premiere of The Rookie will probably be around the same time as its spin-off, The Rookie: North. The spin-off was recently greenlit after a successful pilot and follows Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a new police officer in the same world as the original series, but working in the Pierce County Police Department.
We haven’t revealed our plans for the rest of the season, but it’s clear that pairing shows within the same fictional universe is a good strategy – we’ve already seen it work well. It’s natural that shows and their spin-offs appeal to the same audience and perform better together than other combinations.
I remember when I first joined ABC, around the time we launched “Rookie: Feds.” It quickly became obvious that releasing those shows together mid-season was a smart move.
