Please be aware that the following information contains spoilers for The Simpsons season 37, episode 7, which will air in the UK on November 24th.
The most recent episode of The Simpsons surprised viewers with the unexpected death of a long-running character who’s been part of the show since the start.
I was really moved by that episode, ‘Sashes to Sashes.’ It featured Alice Glick, the church organist in Springfield, passing away right during a sermon. It was so touching, and they even held a memorial service for her at Springfield Elementary. It was a beautiful, albeit sad, moment.
As a big fan of the show, I was pretty shocked by Alice’s death. I know some characters have come back from the dead before, but according to executive producer Tim Long, who spoke with People magazine, this time it’s for real – Alice is gone for good. It’s a genuinely permanent loss, which is pretty rare for this series!
He pointed out that Alice, the organist, will be remembered through her wonderful music, effectively living on through it. However, he also stated plainly that she has, unfortunately, passed away.

Alice was first introduced in a 1991 episode of the show, “Three Men and a Comic Book,” with Cloris Leachman providing her voice. After Leachman’s death in 2021, Tress MacNeille began voicing the character.
Earlier this year, viewers became concerned that the character of Mr. Largo, Lisa’s music teacher, might be dead after a casual mention by a student named Devin at Springfield Elementary.
Honestly, I was shocked to hear the producers say they never really thought anyone would buy the idea of him being killed off-screen. Jessica Conrad, one of the executive producers and writers, told TVLine she didn’t expect people would actually believe they’d go that route. It’s kind of interesting to know they had confidence in the character, I guess!
Over the show’s run, several characters have met their end, including Frank Grimes, Bleeding Gums Murphy, Maude Flanders, Mona Simpson, Hyman Krustofsky, and Larry Dalrymple.
Last season’s finale showed Marge Simpson dying in a brief glimpse of the future, but fans reacted strongly. Executive producer Matt Selman clarified that “The Simpsons” doesn’t have a fixed timeline, and Marge is only shown as deceased in a single, potential future episode.
New episodes of The Simpsons season 37 arrive on Disney+ on Mondays in the UK.
