Dwayne Johnson, previously known as ‘The Rock,’ has become a major movie star, earning the title of highest-paid actor thanks to hits like *Jumanji*, *Jungle Cruise*, *Skyscraper*, and *Moana*. While his latest film, *Black Adam*, didn’t perform as well, he’s making a strong comeback with a powerful role in *The Smashing Machine*. The film received a 15-minute standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival, and the recently released trailer offers a preview of what audiences can expect.
The film tells the true story of Mark Kerr, nicknamed “The Smashing Machine,” a former MMA/UFC champion. It follows his successful career in the MMA world and his tragic downfall due to opioid addiction.
Emily Blunt plays opposite him, reuniting with him after their work on ‘Jungle Cruise,’ though this new film is quite different. It’s already generating awards season buzz, but it’s still too early to tell if it will reach the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, or Oscars. ‘The Smashing Machine’ is Benny Safdie’s first solo directing project and his first narrative film without his brother, Josh, with whom he collaborated for many years. They ended their partnership five years after ‘Uncut Gems’ to pursue individual projects, and this film appears to be a strong contender.
Like the recent film *The Iron Claw*, this movie is based on a true story that many people should see. Given the buzz surrounding it, we’re hoping it finds a larger audience and receives the recognition it deserves.
The Smashing Machine is released on 3rd October 2025
