Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which became the highest-earning video game movie ever, a sequel was almost guaranteed to be a hit. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, released this spring, received mixed reviews but performed very well at the box office. It’s currently the top-grossing movie of the year by a significant amount, earning $966.5 million worldwide, and paving the way for more films based on Nintendo games from Illumination. Now, fans can enjoy The Super Mario Galaxy Movie from the comfort of their homes.
As announced last week, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available to rent or buy digitally. You can find it on platforms like Apple and Amazon. Renting the movie costs $24.99, and purchasing it for your digital collection costs $29.99.
Will The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Finish As 2026’s Highest-Grossing Movie?

Now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available for home viewing, its time in theaters is winding down. It earned $4.4 million domestically this past weekend (May 15th-17th), placing sixth, and ticket sales have been decreasing since its strong opening in early April. As things calm down, it’s a good moment to look at overall box office numbers and consider whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie might become the highest-grossing film of 2023.
While it’s still possible The Super Mario Bros. Movie could reach $1 billion in total earnings, it’s going to be difficult. Currently, it needs about $33.4 million more to hit that mark. Although it will continue to earn money in theaters, sales of the movie on DVD and streaming will reduce that total, meaning it’s likely to finish just under $1 billion. Nintendo will probably be happy with that outcome, but it could mean Mario eventually falls from the number one spot.
Several movies coming out this summer have a good chance of earning over $1 billion worldwide. In June, we’ll see Toy Story 5, the newest film in a popular series that has already produced two billion-dollar hits. Another potential blockbuster is Minions & Monsters from Illumination. The Despicable Me franchise, which began in 2010, has been incredibly successful, and the Minions characters are particularly popular. Minions & Monsters could be a strong competitor to Mario, though it will face a lot of competition during the busy summer season. July brings Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a highly anticipated Marvel film expected to be one of the year’s biggest events. The previous Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, earned nearly $2 billion, and while Brand New Day might not reach that height, earning less than $1 billion would be unexpected.
December is likely to see a blockbuster with Avengers: Doomsday, given that the previous four Avengers films each earned over $1 billion. While it will compete with Dune: Part Three (and miss out on premium IMAX showings), Doomsday is still expected to perform very well, especially if fans love it and go back to see it multiple times. If Marvel’s hopes are realized, Doomsday could be difficult to beat at the box office. No matter what happens, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is projected to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It’s worth noting that in 2025, only five movies reached $900 million worldwide, making that a significant achievement.
