Ed McGuinness’s captivating storytelling will shine brighter than ever before in a comic that showcases his unique abilities best. If you’re a Marvel Comics enthusiast, chances are you’ve seen McGuinness’s art across numerous titles such as Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Hulk, and many others. The powerful artwork and energetic, action-packed scenes of McGuinness will be the main event in Marvel All-On-One, a standalone 50-page comic written by the current writer of Fantastic Four, Ryan North. This epic tale features The Thing from the Fantastic Four taking on the entire Marvel Universe, page after splash page! Doesn’t that sound thrilling? As The Thing would put it, it’s time for some serious clobberin’!
As a passionate moviegoer diving into the world of comics, I recently sat down with Ed McGuinness to gain insights into his unique process for creating Marvel All-On-One #1. This comic, filled with splash and double-page spreads, presents a challenge distinct from working on a monthly title. McGuinness explained how he tailors his artistic approach to make each expansive panel pop while maintaining the story’s narrative flow.
He also shared why The Thing is an ideal Marvel hero for this one-shot, emphasizing the character’s physicality and emotional depth. We were even fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at some exclusive interior pages from Marvel All-On-One #1, hitting the shelves on August 20th!
During our chat, we discussed McGuinness’ most anticipated matchups within the Marvel Universe, and he left us eagerly awaiting the comic’s release to see these clashes unfold. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new addition to the Marvel Universe!
In terms of workload, handling 50 splash pages can be quite a challenge for an artist. I’m interested in knowing how you handle projects like Marvel All-In-One compared to a typical monthly comic book?
Redrawing a book made up entirely of splash pages can be quite intimidating, as each page is a standalone image that needs to advance the story in a coherent and legible manner. I aimed to treat every page as if it were a cover in terms of composition. This required me to meticulously consider the flow and directional momentum, ensuring the viewer’s eye would smoothly transition from one image to the next. It was an enjoyable challenge that also demanded a great deal of effort.
In your view, why do you consider The Thing the ideal character for a grand confrontation such as this, pitting him against the whole Marvel Universe?
One of my most cherished characters has always been The Thing. He’s got an enormous heart and is constantly prepared for a battle. Compared to the Savage Hulk, he might not be as physically powerful, but he compensates with his intelligence. What sets him apart is his unyielding spirit – he never gives up.
Were there any matchups that surprised you while drawing them up?
There sure are, and one especially unexpected! It was pretty cool to draw to say the least!
To conclude, what elements of Marvel All-In-One are you most excited for our readers to discover once it hits the shelves?
I just hope they have as much fun reading it as we had making it!
In this first-person narrative, I’m stepping into the shoes of Ben Grimm, the adored and indomitable Thing, a key member of the Fantastic Four. I’m strong, kind, and relentless, yet constantly dealing with new threats that seem to never end – whether it’s for Earth, the galaxy, or the universe. It’s exhausting! But when I return from a solitary mission in space to find my team, the Fantastic Four, turned against me, along with New York City and apparently the entire world, I’m determined to unravel this mystery. This special Marvel Anniversary issue isn’t just about fighting; it’s about taking on an entire planet in a 50-page epic, where almost every page is a splash page or a double-page spread! Get ready for the biggest, baddest, most clobberingest Marvel story yet – it’s wild, it’s unprecedented, and it’s called Marvel All-on-One!
