More than just teammates, the Fantastic Four are a family – and that family extends beyond its four core members. Throughout their adventures, Marvel’s First Family has relied on a wide network of friends, community members, and powerful cosmic heroes to overcome challenges. While Reed Richards, Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (the Thing) have been the team’s mainstays, others like She-Hulk, Medusa, Ant-Man, Wolverine, and Spider-Man have joined their ranks at times. Beyond official members, the Fantastic Four have also forged strong alliances with numerous heroes who consistently support them.
As a longtime comic book and movie fan, I’ve seen a lot of characters orbit around the Fantastic Four. While Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben are iconic, they’ve always had a great supporting cast. I’ve put together a list of the best allies who’ve helped them out over the years – folks like other heroes, alien friends, and even family members – who aren’t official members of the team. It’s a surprisingly deep bench of characters, and I think you’ll be interested to see who made the cut!
10) Willie Lumpkin

Willie Lumpkin is a unique character in the Fantastic Four universe. First appearing in Fantastic Four #11 in 1963, he was the happy mail carrier for the Baxter Building, where the Fantastic Four lived. Because of his route, he often got caught up in their exciting adventures – like one Christmas when he was accidentally locked in a closet during an attack by the Super-Skrull. He even once helped the Fantastic Four defeat the Mad Thinker! After retiring from the post office, Reed Richards hired him to teach biology at the Future Foundation’s school.
9) Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur

When the Fantastic Four relocated to Yancy Street, they quickly befriended Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Although the Fantastic Four initially seemed a bit distant from the other residents, they eventually became protective of their new neighbors and worked with them. Around this time, Moon Girl developed a friendly, competitive relationship with Valeria Richards, with both girls constantly trying to prove who was smarter. Moon Girl and The Thing first teamed up in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #14, and she appeared alongside the Fantastic Four in both her own comic series and the team’s official adventures.
8) Power Pack

First appearing in Power Pack #1 in 1984, the Power Pack were a unique team – four young siblings who were the first superpowered children in Marvel Comics to operate without adult guidance. They quickly teamed up with the Fantastic Four and became good friends with Franklin Richards, who later joined their adventures. The four siblings – Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie – received their powers from a dying alien, with each child’s abilities tied to a different element. The original Power Pack comic ran for 62 issues, and the team has made occasional appearances throughout Marvel’s history since then.
7) HERBIE

HERBIE the robot first appeared in the 1978 animated series The New Fantastic Four. He was an artificial intelligence created to assist Reed Richards, and was voiced by Frank Welker, known for his work on Scooby-Doo. Interestingly, despite being created for the cartoon, legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby designed the character while working on storyboards for the show. The following year, in 1979, HERBIE was introduced to the comic books in Fantastic Four #209 by Marv Wolfman and John Byrne. Since then, HERBIE has consistently been a part of the Fantastic Four, even showing up in the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the recent comic event Age of Revelation.
6) Wyatt Wingfoot

Wyatt Wingfoot first appeared in Fantastic Four #50 (1966), concluding the “Galactus Trilogy” storyline. Initially, he wasn’t a superhero; he was simply Johnny Storm’s college roommate at Metro College in New York and a gifted athlete. The two became close friends, and Wyatt frequently visited the Baxter Building, often assisting the Fantastic Four. He even developed a relationship with She-Hulk while she was on the team, solidifying his role as an ally.
5) Crystal

Crystal is part of the Inhuman Royal Family and the younger sister of Medusa. Interestingly, she holds the distinction of being the very first Inhuman character introduced in Marvel Comics, appearing in Fantastic Four #45 – the issue that initially presented the Inhumans. While Medusa appeared earlier, it wasn’t until this issue that the Inhumans were formally introduced. Crystal has a complex romantic history, having dated Johnny Storm and later marrying Quicksilver, with whom she had a daughter named Luna. Throughout the Fantastic Four comics, she was initially the most visible Inhuman character, before Medusa officially joined the team as a member.
4) Namor

Namor is a very early Marvel character, first appearing in 1939, even before Marvel Comics officially began. He initially fought alongside the All-Winners Squad, and later reappeared in Fantastic Four #4 (1962) with no memory of his past, which Johnny Storm helped him regain. But when he discovered the damage humans were inflicting on the oceans and threatening Atlantis, his underwater home, he became driven by revenge. Over time, he also became an ally, often due to his romantic interest in the Invisible Woman.
3) Alicia Masters

Alicia Masters is a popular and dependable character in the Fantastic Four series. First appearing in 1962, she’s a talented sculptor who, despite being blind, can perfectly recreate anyone’s likeness simply by feeling their features. Though her stepfather is the villainous Puppet Master, she consistently supports the Fantastic Four. She’s primarily known for her long-term relationship and eventual marriage to Ben Grimm, though a complicated storyline involved a temporary romance and marriage to Johnny Storm – it was later revealed that the Alicia involved was actually a Skrull impostor.
2) Silver Surfer

I first encountered the Silver Surfer when he showed up in Fantastic Four #48, leading Galactus to our planet. It was amazing – and terrifying! Then, in what everyone calls the “Galactus Trilogy,” he actually turned against Galactus and helped the Fantastic Four save Earth. As a result, he was exiled here, separated from his home. After that, he became a true friend and ally to the team, always there to fight alongside them, especially when they faced really powerful, cosmic threats. Honestly, I think the Silver Surfer is one of Jack Kirby’s best creations from his time working on Fantastic Four.
1) Franklin & Valeria Richards

Although Franklin and Valeria Richards often fight alongside the Fantastic Four – as Reed and Sue’s children – they aren’t official members of the team, but rather powerful allies. Franklin, when his abilities manifest (which is about once a year now), is the most powerful ally the Fantastic Four have. And Valeria is arguably the smartest, capable of inventions even her father, Reed Richards, couldn’t imagine. Both children are incredibly valuable to the family and are the best allies Reed and Sue could ask for.
