2026 promises to be an exciting year for science fiction films, with the return of two iconic directors to the genre after a long hiatus. Recent years have already been good for sci-fi, with critically acclaimed movies like Gravity, Ex Machina, and Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus successful franchises like the new Planet of the Apes series. However, Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve have truly stood out as the defining filmmakers of science fiction for the past 15 years.
Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve have given us some of the most impressive and intellectually stimulating science fiction films of the last fifteen years with movies like Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the Dune films. Both directors have new projects planned for 2026: Nolan will explore epic fantasy with The Odyssey, and Villeneuve will conclude his Dune series with Dune: Part Three. However, next year will also bring new films from two giants of the sci-fi genre: Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott.
Ridley Scott & Steven Spielberg Return To Sci-Fi In 2026

The science fiction films we’ve enjoyed over the past three to four decades, and the work of directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, wouldn’t be the same without Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott. This is true for all of cinema, but they’ve particularly shaped the sci-fi genre. Spielberg’s films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and Jurassic Park, alongside Scott’s Alien and Blade Runner (and later, The Martian), revolutionized how we see alien encounters, space travel, artificial intelligence, and futuristic worlds. While Spielberg’s last sci-fi film was Ready Player One in 2018 and Scott’s was Alien: Covenant in 2017, that’s set to change in 2026.
Steven Spielberg is releasing his first big summer movie in ten years – his last was The BFG in 2016 – and the initial secrecy surrounding it has built a lot of anticipation. Originally known only as a UFO project, the film is now revealed to be titled Disclosure Day. Starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, the movie centers around the discovery of alien life or a UFO, and the challenges of sharing that truth with the world. Though details are still limited, the trailer suggests a clever, original, and thrilling story – a classic Spielberg experience we haven’t seen in a long time.
Scott’s newest film is The Dog Stars, based on Peter Heller’s popular novel. The movie stars Jacob Elordi as Hig, a man trying to survive nine years after a deadly virus wipes out most of the world. When he receives a signal from another survivor, he embarks on a life-altering journey. With Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley also starring, this post-apocalyptic thriller promises to be both exciting and thought-provoking, particularly given Scott’s directing style – though his films can be uneven, he’s capable of creating truly excellent work.
2026 Will Be A Great Year For Sci-Fi Fans

Science fiction has been doing well lately, but 2025 hasn’t been a particularly strong year for movies. However, 2026 looks very promising. Upcoming films from directors like Scott and Spielberg, plus the highly anticipated Dune 3 from Villeneuve (especially considering how excellent Part Two was), should make it a fantastic year for the genre.
Fans of the genre have even more to look forward to! Coming soon are intriguing titles like Flowervale Street (a time travel and dinosaur adventure), Gore Verbinski’s new film Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, and several exciting installments in popular franchises: 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Masters of the Universe, Supergirl, and Avengers: Doomsday.
One of the most anticipated films is Project Hail Mary. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, it boasts a script by Drew Goddard, who also wrote The Martian, and is based on a novel by the same author, Andy Weir. With its promising visuals and impressive team, it’s shaping up to make 2026 a standout year for science fiction movies.
