Okay, so I just heard they’re planning a remake of Kurt Russell’s Escape from New York, which, honestly, is a tough one. The biggest challenge? Finding someone who can fill Kurt Russell’s shoes as Snake Plissken. The original was just a brilliant, gritty B-movie – a future where Manhattan’s become this massive, inescapable prison, and the only guy who can get inside to rescue the President is this seriously tough outlaw. It’s a cool concept, but Snake is such an iconic character, nailing that role is going to be hard!
It’s hard to believe now, but when Escape from New York came out in 1981, nobody thought of Kurt Russell as a tough guy! Most of us remembered him as that funny actor from Disney movies like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. But playing Snake Plissken totally changed things for him, and it paved the way for some amazing roles in films like The Thing. It really launched his career into a whole new level.
While generally a great film, Escape from New York shows its age due to its limited budget, which kept the action and sets relatively small in scale. A remake has been discussed for over two decades, and it’s easy to imagine how impressive a modern, big-budget version could be.
Despite talk of a new version of Escape from New York, both Kurt Russell and John Carpenter haven’t seemed very excited about it. Several directors, including Robert Rodriguez and Radio Silence, have been considered for the project, and actors like Gerard Butler and Jon Bernthal were once potential candidates to play Snake Plissken.
Even though previous attempts haven’t worked, StudioCanal is trying again to remake Escape from New York. It’s unlikely Kurt Russell will participate, and that’s a major problem for the project.
The Escape From New York’s Biggest Problem Is Recasting Kurt Russell
Before making Escape from New York, Carpenter had directed Kurt Russell in the 1979 TV movie Elvis. Carpenter was very impressed with Russell and wanted him for the role of Snake, but his producers preferred more established actors like Charles Bronson or Tommy Lee Jones. Ultimately, Carpenter convinced them, and Russell got the part.
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. He completely embodies the character through his appearance and dry wit, and since he’s the only actor who’s ever played him, that feeling is even stronger. More than anything else – like the director or how much money they spend – the upcoming reboot needs to get the casting of Snake Plissken exactly right.
None Of The Actors Linked To Play Snake In Escape From New York Feel Right
Looking at the actors considered for the new Escape from New York film is like reading a list of Hollywood’s biggest stars from the last twenty years. Gerard Butler was a strong contender around 2008, and others mentioned include Tom Hardy, Dan Stevens (known from The Guest), Charlie Hunnam, and even Wyatt Russell, Kurt Russell’s son.
Finding the right actor for Snake is proving difficult. Actors like Hardy and Bernthal are already well-known for playing similar, gritty characters, and Wyatt Russell has said he doesn’t want the role.
The other actors considered are too predictable and frankly, uninspired. The new Escape from New York remake needs someone unexpected, but who also feels like a perfect fit for the role.
The Escape From New York Remake Should Take The Same Casting Approach As The Original
You know, when Kurt Russell took on the role of Plissken in Carpenter’s Escape from New York, he wasn’t exactly known as an action hero. And I think that’s key for any remake. They shouldn’t go for a typical action star or someone famous for superhero roles. It would be much better to find an actor people recognize, but who doesn’t come with all that genre baggage. Someone unexpected, really.
Okay, so the potential cast for the new Escape from New York is starting to take shape, and it’s packed with some seriously hot names right now – Austin Butler, Jeremy Allen White, Aaron Pierre, Jacob Elordi, to name a few. Honestly, the biggest challenge they have is finding someone to fill Kurt Russell’s shoes. It’s a tough ask, but if they nail the casting, I think they could really pull this reboot off.
