Steve Coogan, who will be in the next season of The White Lotus, has spoken about Helena Bonham Carter unexpectedly leaving the show after only a few days of filming.
Well-known British actors Steve Coogan and Helena Bonham Carter were among the first cast members for the new season, but their characters’ storylines soon went in different directions when filming began last month.
So, apparently, HBO had a bit of a hiccup with a character Mike White wrote for Helena Bonham Carter. From what I understand, it just wasn’t working out on set – they said the character didn’t really click with what they were going for. Now they’re going back to the drawing board to rework and rewrite it completely. It’s a shame, but sometimes these things just happen during production, right?
Laura Dern, who has worked with Mike White before, is taking on the role. Sources say she’ll play a former star trying to revive her career at the Cannes Film Festival (according to Variety).

It’s no surprise that the recent cast change has caused a lot of online discussion, and many viewers were shocked to learn that such a talented actress like Helena Bonham Carter was let go.
When asked about the situation on the BAFTA TV Awards 2026 red carpet, Coogan stuck closely to the official statement released by HBO.
He explained to Deadline that the role evolved in a way that didn’t quite fit the story. He felt the character and its interactions weren’t developing as he’d hoped.

Laura Dern and Mike White have worked together successfully before. They previously collaborated on the HBO comedy-drama Enlightened, which received critical acclaim for two seasons before being cancelled. Dern also starred in White’s 2007 film, Year of the Dog.
I was really interested to hear that Steve Coogan and Mike White hadn’t worked together before, but apparently White was a fan of my two favorites starring Coogan – 24 Hour Party People and Coffee and Cigarettes. He told Deadline he’d admired those films, which is cool – always nice to know talented people appreciate good work!
Steve Coogan won a BAFTA award for his performance as Alan Partridge. His winning role was in the mockumentary ‘How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge)’, which continues the character’s long-running broadcast career and satirizes mental health topics.
For Best Actor in a Comedy, Coogan was up against strong contenders including Jim Howick (from ‘Here We Go’), Jon Pointing (‘Big Boys’), Lenny Rush (‘Am I Being Unreasonable?’), Mawaan Rizwan (‘Juice’), and Oliver Savell (‘Changing Ends’).
I heard the actor is probably heading back to France really soon! They’re filming the next season of The White Lotus over there, mostly on the beautiful French Riviera, and it sounds like they’re getting back to work quickly.
The White Lotus season 4 is coming soon. Catch up on NOW and HBO Max.
