Comic auctions are great for discovering rare and valuable issues – you never know what hidden gems you might find! This is especially true for large auctions, and a massive collection of British comics is about to be sold. It’s the second part of an auction featuring what’s believed to be the biggest private comic collection ever offered, and it includes not only British titles, but also some classic DC comics.
Excalibur Auctions is holding a huge sale of British comics, featuring thousands of titles, original artwork, promotional items, toys, and fan-made magazines. The collection belonged to a private collector named Peter Hansen, and it includes several comics that DC fans will be excited about. Among the highlights are issues #1-3 of Batman Double Double Comics – unique books created from unsold DC comics that were returned, then rebound in groups of four. Other ‘Double Double’ titles available include Justice League, Jimmy Olson, Strange Adventures, Lois Lane, and Worlds Finest. The auction also features Silver Age issues of popular titles like The Brave and the Bold, The Flash, Aquaman, and Detective Comics. You can view the entire collection here.
The Peter Hansen Collection of British Comics and Comic Art Is A Truly One of a Kind Auction

The Peter Hansen Collection includes a wide variety of items that Hansen kindly lent to places like the Cartoon Museum and the National Centre for Children’s Books over many years. Because the collection was so large, it had to be sold in several parts, making this auction and collection exceptionally unique.

Tom Barker, a pop culture, movie, and music expert at Excalibur Auctions, explains that a significant amount of work is going into organizing, researching, photographing, and listing the items – it’s both preparation for the auction and an effort to preserve them for the future. He’s proud to be offering this remarkable collection to the public for the first time, and believes it will strongly appeal to collectors, historians, and fans of pop culture.
This collection features a variety of rare comics, including issue #1 of POW! from Power Comics (Oldhams Press). It’s complete with the original Spider Matic Gun and all of its Spider Disc bullets, still attached to the original cardboard backing. This issue is also significant for Marvel enthusiasts because it reprinted the first story from Amazing Spider-Man #1, specifically for a British audience.
The auction also features a large collection of other Marvel comics. This includes 27 hardcover annuals with stories featuring popular characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Star Wars, and The Avengers. Additionally, there are collections of Captain America and early issues of X-Men, some of which feature the first appearances of various characters.

Notable items up for auction include a rare issue of TV Tornado #1, the original painted cover art for Eagle Holiday Special #6, artwork by Frank Bellamy from Eagle Volume 9 #47, a complete, boxed Dan Dare Planet Gun, and Better Comics Volume 3 #1, along with many other collectibles.

This collection showcases the history of comic publishing in Britain, from the first British comic heroes to the introduction of American favorites. It features original artwork by famous illustrators, complete vintage issues, and related collectibles, making it a unique find for both researchers and collectors. More than just an auction, this is a key event in protecting and honoring Britain’s comic book history.
The Peter Hansen Collection Auction Part II will begin on May 9, 2026.
