The X-Men’s 52-Years Long Grudge Didn’t Start for the Reason You Think

The X-Men are known for some of the most exciting moments in comic book history. Originally, they weren’t very popular, but a special issue in 1974, Giant-Size X-Men #1, completely revitalized the team. This issue introduced iconic new members like Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Writer Chris Claremont transformed the X-Men, and their stories were groundbreaking. Over the years, their comics have featured incredible villains, action-packed battles, touching love stories, and heartbreaking losses. They’ve also given us one of the most famous rivalries in comics: the long-standing conflict between Wolverine and Cyclops.

Cyclops and Wolverine were fundamentally different. Cyclops was created and trained to be a dedicated mutant soldier by Charles Xavier, deeply committed to his team and protecting others. Wolverine, on the other hand, was a hardened loner, a killer who kept people at a distance due to his fear of losing them. He didn’t appreciate being directed by the younger, visor-wearing Cyclops. While many believe their rivalry stemmed from Wolverine’s feelings for Jean Grey, those familiar with the X-Men’s history know their conflict began much earlier, before any romantic feelings came into play.

Wolverine and Cyclops Were Clashing From the Start

The rivalry between Wolverine and Cyclops, often fueled by their shared feelings for Jean Grey, is a classic trope in storytelling. This tension has been a recurring theme in X-Men comics for years. Its roots are explored in the back-up story, “First Night,” found in Classic X-Men #1. This story takes place immediately after the events of Giant-Size X-Men, when the new and original X-Men teams reunited at the mansion. It reveals the instant connection and attraction between Logan (Wolverine) and Jean.

As a longtime X-Men fan, I remember everyone knew Logan and Jean Grey had something going on way before it was ever confirmed. It officially started to become clear when Jean came back in X-Men #101 back in 1976 and became the Phoenix. They had tons of charged moments, and Cyclops was seriously not thrilled about it, to say the least! Everyone always focuses on the love triangle and how it fueled their rivalry, but it’s easy to forget all the stuff that happened before Jean rejoined the team – the dynamics between Logan and Cyclops were already pretty tense!

These days, Cyclops is seen as the responsible, level-headed member of the team, especially when things get stressful. But when the X-Men first became well-known again, Scott Summers used to lose his temper much more often. Perhaps it was the challenge of working with the new mutants, but there are many instances of him angrily shouting orders at his teammates. And every time he did, Wolverine would immediately challenge him. Their conflict wasn’t about romantic rivalry; they simply couldn’t stop arguing.

As a longtime X-Men fan, I always loved the artwork from those early All-New, All-Different issues, especially by Dave Cockrum. He was incredible at showing what characters were feeling – you could really see the friction between Wolverine and Cyclops every time they were on the same page. Re-reading those comics makes it so clear why they couldn’t stand each other, even before Jean Grey complicated things. They just had fundamentally different personalities and were bound to clash. Interestingly, Cyclops actually threw the first punch – literally! He slapped Wolverine in X-Men #97, which was only the fifth issue they’d even shared, four issues before Jean joined the team.

Cyclops and Wolverine Came to Blows Before Logans’ Crush on Jean Was Ever Introduced

The long-standing conflict between Wolverine and Cyclops is central to the X-Men’s story. It revealed Wolverine’s personality and made his eventual development into a team player all the more impactful. Their rivalry ebbed and flowed over time, becoming a defining characteristic of both characters and appearing in almost every version of the story. While most adaptations portray their conflict as stemming from a romantic rivalry, the original comics present a different reason for their animosity.

Many fans point to Wolverine as the one who started the conflict, and it’s easy to see why – his early behavior was difficult. But looking back, Cyclops wasn’t much better in how he handled Wolverine’s defiance. In fact, Cyclops actually made the first aggressive move. It’s time to admit that Scott Summers had the power to prevent the long-standing feud, but he let Wolverine get under his skin. That initial reaction from Cyclops sparked one of the team’s most famous rivalries.
