I’ve never been part of a movie production, so I rely on actors’ testimonies when they describe filmmaking as both rewarding and draining, involving countless adjustments along the way. This applies to acclaimed Best Picture winners, blockbuster superhero films, and even renowned comedies like those I’ve heard about from Craig Robinson’s anecdote with Seth Rogen during the making of the 2013 comedy This Is The End.
Lately, I had a chat with Robinson about the home release of “The Bad Guys 2”, now available on Digital following its initial release in the 2025 movie schedule. In our discussion, I inquired from the actor behind the character Mr. Shark – the master of disguise – what the most significant distinction was between producing an animated film and a live-action one. He shared that there are several benefits to voice work as it allows for revisions: “You have the advantage of being able to return.
Different people might approach it differently, but my method involves reading the script multiple times to get a feel for the character. I take it line by line, exploring various interpretations for each line. At times, as we progress into the project, we discover something intriguing about the character that we then revisit and revise from the beginning. This is one of the benefits of voice work, as you can easily go back and refine your performance.
When I inquired from a former Office colleague if he ever needed to reshoot parts of his live-action movies due to character or scene adjustments, Robinson revealed an anecdote about Seth Rogen and the entire cast of This is the End during the filming of their 2013 apocalyptic comedy.
In a rare instance, we only needed to reshoot something once, which was specifically for “This is the End”. Initially, Seth Rogen recorded his scenes, then everyone improvised their lines around the table while Seth threw items back at them. Due to this spontaneous improvisation, we had to re-record Seth’s scenes. However, when it comes to animation and voiceovers, you can repeat that process multiple times without any issues.
In the 2013 comedy where actors portrayed highly exaggerated versions of themselves, it’s striking that Robinson, Rogen, and the rest of the extensive cast didn’t need to reshoot additional scenes, such as the unexpected yet fantastic dance sequence. Frankly, I can imagine myself struggling to keep a straight face while filming the outrageous heavenly scene with the Backstreet Boys and would likely need to reshoot it multiple times.
Due to Robinson’s musical expertise, it’s not hard to imagine that the idea of a “Bad Guys” musical must have filled him with joy. Picture him enjoying every moment as he portrayed himself, socializing in heaven with his dearest friends, causing mischief alongside one of the most iconic pop groups ever formed.
In similar fashion to many newly released films, “The Bad Guys 2” can now be rented or purchased digitally. From October 7th, it will also be accessible in 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats.
