‘There’s No Demon Slayer This Year’: New Anime Movie Sets Record Opening Day With $7.1 Million

The anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle was a huge hit worldwide last year, and fans immediately started asking about a sequel. While Infinity Castle Part 2 is still being made, another popular action anime series will have a chance to release its next film in 2026.

The latest Detective Conan movie, Fallen Angel on the Highway, premiered in Japan on April 10th and earned an impressive 1.13 billion yen (about US$7.1 million) on its opening day. This is the biggest opening day ever for a film in the Detective Conan series.

New Detective Conan: Case Closed Anime Movie Breaks Series Opening-Day Record

The massive popularity of Detective Conan has been recognized by those involved, including voice actor Rikiya Koyama, who plays both Conan’s mentor, Kogoro Mori, and Shinjuro Rengoku in Demon Slayer. At a recent event for the Fallen Angel on the Highway stage play, Koyama playfully stated, “With no Demon Slayer this year, we’ve come out on top. Thank you!”

Detective Conan: Fallen Angel on the Highway is the 29th full-length movie in the popular Detective Conan anime series. Director Takahiro Hasui says it’s the second film in a row to earn over one billion yen on its opening day in theaters.

The 2025 film Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback was also a hit, earning over 1.05 billion yen (about US$6.5 million) from around 690,000 tickets sold. In comparison, Infinity Castle made approximately 1.64 billion yen (US$10.3 million) on its first day in Japan.

Interestingly, Fallen Angel on the Highway set a new record for anime film screenings before it even premiered on April 10th. T-Joy Yokohama, a well-known cinema in Japan’s Yokohama prefecture, reported – the highest number of screenings for any anime film at one location.

The new film has broken the record for the most screenings, previously held by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (2020). Mugen Train had 42 screenings on its opening day at Toho Cinemas Shinjuku.

The story of Fallen Angel on the Highway starts at the Kanagawa Motorcycle Festival in Yokohama. While there, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro Mouri see a black motorcycle speeding away from the police, with Officer Chihaya Hagiwara in pursuit. As they look into what happened, Ran realizes Chihaya is a local celebrity known as the “Goddess of Wind,” making the case even more interesting.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 2 Movie Confirmed for Release in 2027 or Later

Earlier this year, a promotional video from the anime studio Ufotable officially confirmed the project. While the studio hasn’t announced when the highly anticipated anime movie will be released, director Haruo Sotozaki, who worked on Infinity Castle, has shared some exciting hints about it.

In a late 2025 interview, Sotozaki shared that the popular character Inosuke will be more central to the story in Part 2. He encouraged fans to follow the upcoming developments, saying, “Stay tuned and get excited!”

You can watch Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba on Crunchyroll and Netflix. The first movie, Infinity Castle, doesn’t have a confirmed release date for streaming yet. If you’d like to read the original manga by Koyoharu Gotouge in English, VIZ Media has it available.
