These Numbers Explain Why Sony Is Stopping Porting PS5 Games to PC

It’s really no wonder Sony’s backing away from bringing its single player games to PC.

We’ve suspected for some time that people were losing interest in the platform holder’s game ports, and now data from Ampere seems to confirm it. The numbers aren’t very encouraging, frankly.

The Game Business recently shared sales figures for the first month after release for several PlayStation exclusive games, and the numbers are quite remarkable.

  • Ghost of Tsushima: 710k
  • God of War Ragnarok: 300k
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: 260k
  • Horizon Forbidden West: 230k

Sucker Punch’s open-world game was successful, but the other three sequels didn’t do as well. According to The Game Business, God of War Ragnarok had 6.9 million players at launch on PlayStation 5 and 4, making the 300,000 figure quite small in comparison.

However, it’s worth remembering the game took nearly two years to come to Steam, and that’s exactly the problem we’re facing.

Sony understands that releasing PC and PlayStation 5 versions of its games at the same time could boost sales. However, the company prioritizes console sales, and doing so would significantly change its long-established business strategy.

Currently, the company has stopped releasing its big single-player games on consoles. They will continue to publish online games and certain games made by other developers on PC.

Honestly, these numbers don’t really surprise us. Considering God of War Ragnarok has already sold millions of copies on PlayStation, an additional 300,000 sales doesn’t seem like a significant gain.

Sony hasn’t officially said why it’s gradually releasing fewer PC ports, but reliable reports confirm this trend. What Sony does in the near future will clearly reveal its long-term plans for PC gaming.
