Originally titled Tengoku Daimakyo, Heavenly Delusion is a 2023 sci-fi series now available on Hulu with a Disney+ subscription. It’s a unique blend of several popular sci-fi themes, creating a complex and captivating story. The series follows two interconnected narratives: one within a futuristic facility raising gifted children, shielded from a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world, and the other depicting the harsh realities of survival in that ruined landscape. Fifteen years ago, a massive disaster wiped out modern civilization. Now, a group of children live safely hidden away in a special facility. One day, a girl named Tokio receives a mysterious message asking if she wants to leave. Her friend, Mimihime, predicts that two people will come from the outside to rescue her, one of whom looks just like her. But the school’s director warns Tokio that the world outside is a dangerous place. At the same time, a boy named Maru, who is a doppelganger of Tokio, is journeying across the ruined landscape of Japan with a girl named Kiruko, both searching for a legendary paradise.
Similar to many popular anime series, Heavenly Delusion began as a manga. Masakazu Ishiguro created both the original manga and the 2023 anime adaptation, which was animated by Production I.G.
‘Heavenly Delusion’ Is an Underrated Gem on Hulu

Many anime enthusiasts are overlooking Heavenly Delusion, probably because it’s only available on Hulu. However, this 13-episode series is definitely worth watching. While anime often aren’t reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, fans share their opinions and ratings on sites like My Anime List. Currently, Heavenly Delusion has a very impressive score of 8.21 on My Anime List.
I absolutely loved watching Heavenly Delusion, but honestly, the hardest part was finishing it knowing I’d be begging for more! It was a critical success, but it seems like not enough people watched it to get a second season greenlit right away. As of now, Season 2 hasn’t been announced, which is a real bummer. Still, Production I.G. is super busy with a lot of projects, so I’m holding onto hope that we’ll get another season eventually!
