This 2025 Comedy Movie Is Not Being Talked About Anymore, But I Hope It Inspires More Films In Future

Classic slapstick comedy films are becoming rare, especially when it comes to attracting large audiences. It’s been almost ten years since big-budget, purely comedic movies consistently topped the box office. While darker comedies, like Emma Stone’s Bugonia (also known as “Good For Her”), continue to do well and draw crowds, traditional slapstick is fading.

While serious dramas often grab attention, comedies made simply to be funny – like the 2025 film One of Them Days – rarely do. This movie is pure, delightful chaos. Though it touches on relatable issues like dating and finding a place to live, its main goal is to make people laugh, even if that laughter comes from recognizing the absurdities of everyday life.

Horror films dominated 2025, and we saw a surge of funny and scary horror comedies that could become beloved classics. While some predicted the decline of comedy, one film released this year suggests a new wave of hilarious movies is on the horizon.

David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker – known collectively as ZAZ – created some of the most beloved comedies ever made between the late 1970s and early 1990s. They’re best known for Airplane!, a hilarious parody of the film Zero Hour. Another popular hit was The Naked Gun, considered one of the top action comedies of the 1980s.

Leslie Nielsen’s iconic role as Frank Drebin anchors the original Naked Gun trilogy, famous for its silly, over-the-top physical and witty verbal humor. What’s remarkable is that the jokes – a mix of clever wordplay, visual gags, and pop culture nods – still hold up and make people laugh almost forty years later. So, while many were unsure about a remake, it was also greeted with excitement and hope.

Casting Liam Neeson in the 2025 reboot was a brilliant decision. He plays the son of the iconic Frank Drebin, and the new Naked Gun film captures the same hilarious, over-the-top, and playfully absurd spirit of the originals. It’s great to see this type of comedy still works with audiences, especially when so many big movies have moved away from it lately.

The Naked Gun’s Star Power Is A Rarity For Such A Comedy Movie

Hollywood is full of slapstick comedy, especially in action films. While some might think a purely silly movie wouldn’t appeal to most viewers, the new version of The Naked Gun proves them wrong. It’s surprising to see well-known actors taking part in such a comedic project these days.

While stars like Pamela Anderson, Liam Neeson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, and Kevin Durand are well-known, they’re not typically linked to the over-the-top humor of The Naked Gun. This new film is a successful continuation of the original, honoring what came before, fully embracing its comedic style, and bringing back a type of slapstick comedy that’s been rare in recent years.

The Naked Gun’s Style Of Comedy Has Nearly Gone Extinct

Akiva Schaffer, the director of The Naked Gun, is well-known for his work with the comedy group The Lonely Island, which also includes Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. The Lonely Island is famous for its bold, silly songs, sketches, and short videos, and they don’t shy away from the exaggerated humor that often comes with comedic expression.

While over-the-top silliness can work in some comedies, it often falls flat in movies. Even Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a hilarious mockumentary considered one of the best in the genre, tones down the craziness compared to the original Lonely Island sketches. In contrast, the new Naked Gun movie feels like an unedited and overly long sketch from the same group.

It’s a genuinely welcome return to classic comedy for a genre often filled with serious dramas or tragedies. While big-budget action comedies occasionally throw in some silly moments, this film’s more straightforward, often-dismissed humor has surprisingly resonated with audiences.

I Hope Hollywood Doesn’t Learn The Wrong Lesson From Its Success

It’s possible any positive reaction to the new movie will be simply because it’s a continuation of an older series. However, a large part of the current movie audience wasn’t familiar with Leslie Nielsen or The Naked Gun before seeing Liam Neeson’s film. While I was excited about bringing back the original trilogy, many viewers were drawn in because of Neeson himself.

Franchise movies continue to dominate the box office, as they have for years. While the success of The Naked Gun (2025) is great, I worry it will encourage even more reboots and remakes, when the real lesson is that audiences simply appreciate lighthearted, funny entertainment.

Liam Neeson’s Comments On The Naked Gun’s Future Makes Me Hopeful

Liam Neeson has dashed hopes for another Naked Gun movie, and that actually makes me optimistic about the future of comedy in Hollywood. He doesn’t want to revisit the franchise, and I’m hoping this means we’ll see more original, lighthearted comedies like the recent Naked Gun reboot, instead of just relying on old ideas.
