A classic supernatural thriller with an unexpected link to Marvel is now available on streaming again. Supernatural thrillers expertly combine the suspense of a good thriller with genuinely spooky paranormal elements, making them incredibly captivating. With streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Paramount+ announcing their September releases, a fantastic but often overlooked thriller has returned to one of those platforms.
Starting September 1st, you can watch The Gift (2000) on Paramount+. This supernatural thriller follows a woman who gets drawn into a mystery surrounding a missing person after having a psychic experience. While it’s quite different from the superhero films popular in theaters now, it actually has an interesting link to Marvel. The Gift was Sam Raimi’s last film before he directed the Spider-Man trilogy, and it paired him with actors Rosemary Harris and J.K. Simmons, who later appeared in his Spider-Man movies as Aunt May Parker and J. Jonah Jameson, respectively.
Why You Should Watch The Gift
The Gift isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s a well-made and predictable mystery that will hold your attention until the very end, thanks to Raimi’s skillful direction. The story centers on a murder investigation, and the film effectively combines realistic drama with supernatural themes, highlighted by Cate Blanchett’s compelling performance as Annabelle “Annie” Wilson, a woman drawn into the case after having a premonition. Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, and Hilary Swank also give noteworthy performances that move the plot forward.
The movie received a varied response from both critics and viewers, earning a 57% rating on the Tomatometer and a 55% rating on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, but it truly shines as an example of captivating atmospheric storytelling. Director Raimi crafts a gripping and unsettling psychological thriller that’s a compelling narrative, builds suspense gradually, and is full of unexpected twists to keep the audience engaged.
New Movies Streaming on Paramount+
The Gift is just one of the many new movies and shows added to Paramount+ this September. The streaming service regularly updates its offerings with fresh content each month, and the beginning of September saw a large number of new releases. On September 1st, viewers gained access to films such as Face/Off, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Like Water for Chocolate, Murder on the Orient Express, National Lampoon’s Animal House, Road to Perdition, and Universal Soldier.
The biggest news from Paramount+ in September was a focus on horror, perfectly timed for Halloween. If you’re looking for a fright, subscribers can now stream scary movies including the original eight Friday the 13th films, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Crow, The Monster Squad, and The Woman in Black.
