This A New Hope Plot Point Still Makes No Sense 49 Years Later

The world of Star Wars is famous for changing its backstory – a practice known as retconning. While these changes have sometimes been great, like introducing Ahsoka Tano as Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice or explaining Order 66 with the clone inhibitor chips, they’ve also caused problems for the franchise. Though some blame Disney for this trend in recent Star Wars movies and shows, it’s actually been happening since the very beginning.

One of the most famous moments in Star Wars is a major retcon – the shocking reveal that Darth Vader is actually Luke Skywalker’s father, Anakin Skywalker. The prequel trilogy also relied heavily on retcons, helping to connect it with the original films. While these changes have been frequent and sometimes necessary for the franchise, they’ve also caused numerous issues and inconsistencies within the overall Star Wars timeline.

The prequel films, especially, added details that actually made parts of the original Star Wars trilogy harder to understand. For example, Padmé’s death happened very shortly after Luke and Leia were born, which doesn’t quite add up when Leia later remembers her mother. While some have suggested Leia’s connection to the Force might explain this, there’s another problem created by the prequels in A New Hope that hasn’t been addressed.

Uncle Owen Didn’t Know C-3PO In A New Hope

Before the Skywalker family’s history was expanded through nine films and several TV series, A New Hope presented a straightforward family situation: Luke Skywalker grew up on Tatooine with his Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen. The movie hinted at a past involving Luke’s parents, and he was curious about his father. Overall, A New Hope felt like a fantastical adventure happening to an ordinary young man.

It felt natural that when Uncle Owen and Luke found droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, they appeared to be ordinary robots with important data that somehow ended up with their family. Later films, like The Empire Strikes Back and especially Attack of the Clones, showed Luke Skywalker wasn’t ordinary and revealed a direct connection between the droids and his family. This later information actually made the way the droids arrived in A New Hope seem illogical.

Attack Of The Clones Revealed Owen Once Lived With C-3PO

Following their deaths in A New Hope, it seemed unlikely we’d see Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen again. However, they’ve since appeared in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. While it’s been enjoyable learning more about Luke’s aunt and uncle, these appearances have created some complications. For example, Attack of the Clones showed that C-3PO once lived with them.

Long before the events of A New Hope, Cliegg Lars, Owen’s father, rescued and married Anakin’s mother, Shmi Skywalker. Around that time, C-3PO began working on their farm – the same farm we see in A New Hope. Considering C-3PO lived with the family for a while and eventually left with Anakin, it’s strange that Owen doesn’t seem to recognize him when they meet again in A New Hope.

C-3PO was one of many protocol droids that looked alike, but he definitely had a memorable personality. Owen Lars was particularly sensitive to anything connected to Anakin Skywalker, as Obi-Wan Kenobi demonstrated, so it’s understandable he’d notice C-3PO. While it’s easy to see why Owen wouldn’t recognize R2-D2—they barely knew each other—Star Wars hasn’t explained why Owen completely failed to recognize C-3PO in A New Hope, given their shared history.
