A brand new game, Loulan: The Cursed Sand, recently launched with a lot of hype thanks to Sony’s China Hero Project. It’s set to release on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
In this action role-playing game, you take on the role of “The Cursed Sand,” a skeletal warrior searching for his princess. She’s been lost in the ruins of Loulan, a fallen kingdom, and the game’s story draws inspiration from the historical Silk Road.
ChillyRoom, the team behind this game, is made up of experienced developers who have a history of working on well-known titles from studios like Santa Monica Studio, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames.
The first trailer for Loulan: The Cursed Sand is out, and the gameplay looks incredibly impressive, clearly demonstrating the developers’ skill and experience.
Imagine a game that blends the dark atmosphere of Hades with the intense, gritty combat of the original God of War on PlayStation 2, and then adds the ability to control sand like in the Prince of Persia games. That’s the kind of experience it offers.
This game features intense close-quarters combat against many powerful enemies and massive creatures. You’ll constantly switch between two forms – a skeletal one and a sand form – each with its own distinct way of fighting.

Okay, so this character is seriously cool! It’s like a skeleton warrior, always rushing into battle with a sword, just slicing through enemies like it’s nothing. Super aggressive and a total powerhouse in a fight!
The sand form prioritizes speed and magical abilities over raw strength. When transformed, you can launch powerful sand projectiles at opponents, quickly teleport to dodge attacks or get into close combat, and even become a swirling sandstorm capable of sweeping enemies away.
As you explore Loulan, you’ll encounter many different areas filled with puzzles and traps. You’ll need to use your skills carefully to get through them.
Throughout the game, you’ll face challenging sub-bosses and massive bosses that will truly test your fighting abilities.

In short, I am instantly sold on this game because it looks incredible.
It’s unusual to have a skeleton as the main character in a video game – Sir Daniel Fortesque from the original *MediEvil* is probably the most well-known example – and the combat in this game appears to be really exciting and quick.
I also really appreciate that the developers are taking a lot of inspiration from the original God of War when creating Loulan: The Cursed Sand, according to the PlayStation Blog.
The older God of War games on PlayStation 2 were known for their intense, non-stop action and violence. Modern God of War games have focused more on storytelling and cinematic moments, so I’m excited that Loulan: The Cursed Sand seems to be going back to that original, combat-focused style.

The biggest letdown is that this game won’t be available on Xbox. It would have been a perfect fit for Xbox Game Pass, and many players would have enjoyed it there.
I’m glad the new Xbox handheld can play Steam games! This means I can still enjoy playing Loulan: The Cursed Sand while traveling, even if I don’t use Xbox Cloud Gaming.
I’m really excited for the release of Loulan: The Cursed Sand on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam, though it’s still a ways off. You can add it to your wishlist now on Steam!
