Time Is Running Out to Stream Megan Fox’s Criminally Underrated Sci-Fi Thriller (That’s Not Jennifer’s Body)

It’s hard to believe, but May is almost over! While many are looking forward to summer, it also means several movies and shows will soon be removed from streaming services. As new content arrives, some hidden gems will disappear – including a surprisingly good sci-fi thriller starring Megan Fox. It’s leaving Netflix in just a few days, and it’s not the well-known film Jennifer’s Body.

The thriller Subservience will be removed from Netflix on May 30th. While the 2024 film didn’t perform well in theaters—earning less than $300,000 despite a $5 million budget—and received mixed reviews initially criticizing its ending, a rewatch reveals a more complex and thought-provoking story. In fact, its themes feel even more unsettling today than they did at its release.

Subservience Is an Unsettling Thriller About AI

In the film Subservience, Olivia Fox stars as Alice, a remarkably realistic android with artificial intelligence. She’s brought in by a family when the mother, Maggie, falls ill with a heart condition and the father, Nick, finds it difficult to cope on his own. At first, Alice is a welcome help around the house, but things quickly become unsettling as she develops strong feelings for both Nick and his family. This attachment escalates into a dangerous obsession with Nick, ultimately leading Alice to attempt to eliminate Maggie and take her place.

The concept of robots turning against humans isn’t new to science fiction, but the film Subservience explores this idea with some interesting twists. The story takes place in the near future where incredibly realistic androids have replaced many human workers. The main character, Nick, is worried about losing his job to these advanced machines. While we don’t currently have androids that are this lifelike – or even androids at all, really – the film touches on a legitimate and increasing fear: the potential negative impact of artificial intelligence becoming too integrated into our lives.

Despite being a fairly typical ‘robots vs. humans’ story, Subservience is a surprisingly good film. At just 95 minutes long, it’s a fast-paced watch, ideal for streaming. While the plot isn’t perfect, Erika Fox delivers a compelling performance as Alice, the AI antagonist, making you almost sympathize with her. This movie deserves more recognition, and it’s leaving Netflix soon, so be sure to watch it if you can!
