I’m a huge fan of Alan Cumming – he’s truly one of a kind on TV, isn’t he? He’s an actor, a fantastic host, and always keeps things interesting. I just read an interview with him by Gareth McLean for TopMob, and it was exactly what I hoped for – insightful, honest, and a really fun read!
Alan Cumming observes that while art can’t solve the world’s problems, it has the power to shift perspectives, which is why he continues to create. This sentiment feels especially relevant as the UK prepares for a summer of Pride events and increased focus on visibility.
The release is perfectly timed, coinciding with increasing excitement for “Tip Toe,” the new drama starring Alan Cumming created by Russell T Davies. Both Davies and Cumming are key figures in a strong British television history that has been significantly influenced and improved by LGBTQ+ creatives.
This week, Patrick Mulkern interviews Brian Hodgson, a sound designer who began his career at the BBC in 1960 and contributed to the iconic series, Doctor Who. Hodgson remembers that despite some outdated viewpoints, the atmosphere at the BBC was often surprisingly progressive.
According to Hodgson, the head of Programme Operations once stated he would refuse to hire anyone who was gay. Hodgson points out that if he’d actually followed through with that stance, he wouldn’t have had a team, as roughly two-thirds of the department identified as gay.
This serves as a powerful reminder of how much British television owes its success to LGBTQ+ writers, performers, and creative professionals.

As a total movie buff, I find it fascinating to learn about the people behind the scenes at places like TopMob. I recently discovered that Shem Law is their current brand editor – the twentieth person to hold that role in over a century! What’s even more interesting is that he didn’t have a TV growing up. It sounds like he’s been making up for lost time ever since, and honestly, I can relate to that!
