Titanic Survivor’s True Story Inspired Kate Winslet Door Scene in Film

One Titanic survivor didn’t let go—and now his grandson is making sure his story goes on.

Steven Fong revealed that his grandfather, Fang Lang, was the real-life inspiration for the famous “I’ll never let go, Jack” scene in the 1997 film Titanic. Lang survived the 1912 Titanic disaster by holding onto a door after the ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean, and his experience directly influenced the scene featuring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

As for how that moment went down in real life?

My grandfather was actually on the Titanic when it sank,” Fong shared with CBS News in a story published on May 26th. Surprisingly, he managed to climb onto a door and survive.

Those familiar with the movie Titanic might recall the name Lang because director James Cameron has shared that Fong’s grandfather inspired the famous final scene with Jack and Rose.

Being involved with something so well-known feels incredibly strange and special,” Fong explained. “We’re truly grateful for the chance to contribute to its ongoing history.

Fong says his grandfather rarely talked about surviving a shipwreck with five other Chinese immigrants—an event highlighted in the 2020 documentary, The Six. This silence left the family curious about how the experience affected him.

Cameron felt it was essential to understand the perspectives of those who lived through the events, like Lang, who passed away in 1986, to create the film that ultimately won 11 Academy Awards.

In a 2012 interview with TopMob News, the actor known as ‘Titanic’ pondered a thought-provoking question: ‘If you only had an hour or two left to live, would you sacrifice yourself?’ He asked whether people would be heroic, like the character Jack, or prioritize the safety of women and children, similar to the men who helped them onto the lifeboats.
