For decades, Marvel has been making movies, and especially with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), their superhero films seem to come out constantly. While most Marvel movies are released in the spring, summer, or late winter, they release so many that a premiere could happen on almost any date. That’s why it was so unusual for four big Marvel movies to come out on the same day.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve noticed something interesting: May 2nd has become a bit of a tradition for them! Over the years, four different Marvel movies have premiered on that date – X2, the first Iron Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and most recently, Thunderbolts. It got me thinking, so I decided to rank all four of them, because honestly, the quality varies quite a bit!
4) The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Released on May 2, 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is generally considered the weakest of these four Marvel movies. Many fans and critics agree it’s the worst live-action Spider-Man film, largely due to its outdated music and visuals, and a confusing story that tries to do too much without being very engaging.
The biggest flaw of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is how poorly it treated its villains – Harry Osborn, Electro, and the Rhino. These characters were drastically different from their comic book versions in terms of appearance, personality, and backstory. Despite a well-developed relationship between Peter and Gwen and some impressive visual effects, the film feels disjointed overall. It’s mainly remembered as Sony’s final effort to keep Spider-Man separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
3) Thunderbolts*

On May 2, 2025, Thunderbolts (also known as The New Avengers) premiered, bringing a fresh team of superheroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie continued storylines from previous projects like Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, and featured some of the most beloved new characters from the Multiverse Saga, assembling what many consider the biggest MCU team since the original Avengers.
Following a series of disappointing films, Thunderbolts successfully renewed excitement for Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. The film stood out with its thought-provoking themes and a complete, engaging story—it wasn’t just a collection of cameos and familiar faces. Importantly, Thunderbolts‘ ending left fans genuinely looking forward to what’s next in the MCU, which had been a struggle for the franchise recently.
2) Iron Man

Released on May 2, 2008, Iron Man is a landmark film, widely considered the starting point for the incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. This universe of interconnected movies and TV shows has dramatically reshaped the blockbuster film industry. The film famously introduced Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, a casting choice that remains one of the most celebrated in superhero movie history.
Iron Man marked a shift from the often-over-the-top superhero movies of the early 2000s, delivering a more realistic and enjoyable story that introduced many people to the Marvel universe. Though it began as a relatively small film, the scene after the credits hinted at much larger plans. The journey of Iron Man, like many Marvel tales, officially began on May 2nd after years in development.
1) X2

Released on May 2, 2003, X2 stands out as the strongest film in this group, and is widely considered the best in the X-Men series. It quickly dives into an engaging story, avoiding the lengthy introductions of the first movie, and expertly manages its large cast of characters. X2 also offers the most thoughtful look at the core ideas of the X-Men franchise, framing its story around a potential law requiring mutants to register with the government.
As a huge X-Men fan, I don’t think any of the other movies have quite reached the level of X2. It really was one of the first superhero films to get things right, and you can see its influence all over modern team-up movies. It’s not perfect, but it’s easily one of Marvel’s best, in my opinion.
