Tom Cruise is appearing in a brand new role, unlike anything audiences have seen from him recently—perhaps not since his hilarious performance as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. He presented a first look at the upcoming film at an event in Las Vegas, joined by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who has won two Best Director awards. They described the movie as having a fast-paced, chaotic energy, reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s classic black comedy, Dr. Strangelove.
Although the video hasn’t been released yet, it confirmed our suspicions: Tom Cruise’s new role is a far cry from the action heroes he’s famous for in movies like Top Gun and Mission: Impossible. According to Variety, he’ll be almost unrecognizable as ‘Digger,’ sporting a fake belly and a bad combover with thin, white hair. Plus, he’ll be performing with a strong Southern accent.
Tom Cruise recently shared that it took four decades for him to finally begin playing the role of Digger Rockwell. He then presented a new trailer offering a deeper look at the film’s story. Until now, viewers have only seen brief clips, but the latest footage shows Cruise as the central character, an oil tycoon whose actions may have caused an environmental catastrophe with the potential to escalate into nuclear war. John Goodman plays the U.S. president, who is sick and asks Cruise’s character to resolve the crisis he created.
I’ve always been amazed by Tom Cruise’s commitment to doing his own stunts – he really pushes the limits for his movies! Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu recently shared that while he knows Cruise is famous for incredible physical risks, he thinks the role in their new film, Digger, is different. He said it’s a new kind of bravery, not just about physical danger, but about fully becoming this character. He even described what Tom is doing as a ‘high-wire act,’ and I can’t wait to see what that means on screen!

The new trailer not only reveals Tom Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, but also introduces the impressive supporting cast, featuring Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D’Arcy. It shows Digger caring for his sick cat and wandering his large home, intercut with scenes of planes preparing for combat and melting polar ice.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been a bit surprised that Tom Cruise, despite being nominated for Oscars multiple times and being such a big name in Hollywood, hasn’t actually won one for his acting – though they did give him a special honorary one recently. But I really think his new film, Digger, could finally change that. Everything I’m hearing suggests it’s a strong contender, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finally takes home that golden statue this year!
