Before becoming a blockbuster star in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Venom, Tom Hardy gave what many consider his greatest performance 18 years ago in a little-known, gritty action movie that’s currently popular on HBO Max. He started his film career with roles in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down and even gained a following among sci-fi fans for his appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis. After roles in Marie Antoinette and the crime film RocknRolla brought him some recognition, he delivered a standout performance in the biographical film Bronson – a performance that still ranks as the best of his career.
The movie Bronson quickly climbed the ranks on HBO Max, landing at number six, according to FlixPatrol. It’s right behind the recently added The Shape of Water and ahead of The Notebook, which has been streaming for over a month. Both Bronson and The Shape of Water are new to the service. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is gaining Oscar buzz and is currently the most-watched movie, despite only being available for two days. I’m Chevy Chase, and You’re Not is in fourth place, also after two days. Rounding out the top five are Sinners at number two (streaming for 54 days) and The Smashing Machine in third (9 days).
Tom Hardy plays Michael Peterson, better known as Bronson, a man notorious as Britain’s most violent prisoner. His life took a dramatic turn after a seven-year sentence for armed robbery stretched into decades due to repeated attacks on inmates and prison staff. After a brief release, he was soon back behind bars, continuing his violent behavior and ultimately receiving a life sentence. Hardy brilliantly portrays Bronson, and the film is presented as if Bronson himself is recounting his life story in the style of a theatrical performance.
Tom Hardy Has Never Been Better Than He Was In Bronson

Tom Hardy has become a major Hollywood star thanks to his ability to completely transform himself for different roles. He first gained recognition for his subtle performance in the 2011 spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and his powerful leading role in Warrior that same year. He then cemented his status with blockbuster hits like Mad Max: Fury Road and the Venom series. With further acclaimed performances in films such as The Bikeriders and Dunkirk, Hardy has definitively established himself as a versatile and talented actor.
Tom Hardy’s performance in Bronson was truly exceptional, exceeding all expectations. While director Nicolas Winding Refn deserves credit – though he’s generally known for independent films, with Drive being a standout – his greatest contribution to Bronson was giving Hardy the freedom to fully embody Michael Peterson. Hardy delivered a masterful, unhinged performance so convincing, it didn’t feel like acting – it felt like watching the real Charles Bronson. The film’s unique framing device also added to its impact.
While not universally praised, the Tom Hardy film Bronson currently holds a respectable 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The very questions raised by critics – about the boundary between art and exploitation – hint at what makes the film so compelling. Comparisons to Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange are common, and many consider Hardy’s performance to be a standout. Now, viewers on HBO Max have the opportunity to discover this often-overlooked gem.
