Tom Hardy’s Underrated R-Rated Action Movie Is a Hit on HBO Max, 18 Years Later

Before becoming a blockbuster star in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Venom, Tom Hardy gave what many consider his greatest performance 18 years ago in a little-known, gritty action movie that’s currently popular on HBO Max. He started his film career with roles in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down and even gained a following among sci-fi fans for his appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis. After roles in Marie Antoinette and the crime film RocknRolla brought him some recognition, he delivered a standout performance in the biographical film Bronson – a performance that still ranks as the best of his career.

Tom Hardy plays Michael Peterson, better known as Bronson, a man notorious as Britain’s most violent prisoner. His life took a dramatic turn after a seven-year sentence for armed robbery stretched into decades due to repeated attacks on inmates and prison staff. After a brief release, he was soon back behind bars, continuing his violent behavior and ultimately receiving a life sentence. Hardy brilliantly portrays Bronson, and the film is presented as if Bronson himself is recounting his life story in the style of a theatrical performance.

Tom Hardy Has Never Been Better Than He Was In Bronson

Tom Hardy has become a major Hollywood star thanks to his ability to completely transform himself for different roles. He first gained recognition for his subtle performance in the 2011 spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and his powerful leading role in Warrior that same year. He then cemented his status with blockbuster hits like Mad Max: Fury Road and the Venom series.
