With the recent announcement of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which seems to be a return to the series’ origins, Paul Douglas – a co-creator of the original Tomb Raider – has shared his opinions. He discussed Lara Croft’s comeback and his thoughts on the franchise revisiting its early days in a series of posts on BlueSky.
Along with sharing a drawing of an Allosaurus, Douglas mentioned he’d rather see the series take place in new locations instead of revisiting familiar ones. He also pointed out the challenges faced by the original Tomb Raider developers in the 1990s, who created the game with a small team of just six people.
Douglas wrote, “She’s returned, it seems.” He added that he’d rather discover completely new adventures than revisit something they made under pressure in the 1990s, hoping for a different outcome this time.
Douglas followed up with a more upbeat take on the announcements for both new Tomb Raider games. He admitted the series could use another critically acclaimed title – noting the first Tomb Raider is the only one to score over 90 on Metacritic – but also praised how visually impressive both games look.
He commented that a sequel with over 90% new content is long overdue. He’s excited about the new games, praising their incredible visuals – something that seemed impossible just three decades ago. He added that the true test will be whether the gameplay delivers the same sense of discovery and adventure.
During The Game Awards 2025, two new Tomb Raider games were revealed with trailers: Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Catalyst appears to be a completely new installment in the series, while Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of the original game from 1996.
The new Tomb Raider game, Legacy of Atlantis, is being built with Unreal Engine 5. It will also feature a revised storyline designed to create a consistent and unified history for the entire series.
Will Kerslake, the game director for Tomb Raider: Catalyst, revealed the game’s story will continue after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008). He also confirmed that the recent Tomb Raider reboot trilogy is officially part of the game series’ overall history, detailing the beginning of Lara Croft’s adventures.
He explained that this game marks a fresh start for the Tomb Raider series. Whether you’re a longtime fan or completely new to the franchise, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is built to be a complete and enjoyable adventure for all players.
Release dates for both Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst haven’t been announced yet. Both games are in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Legacy of Atlantis is currently expected to launch in 2026, while Catalyst is planned for 2027.
It looks like she’s returned! Honestly, I’d rather work on completely new projects than revisit something we made under pressure back in the 90s, whether it’s a remake, remaster, or reimagining. Hopefully, things go well. Dinosaurs are still awesome, though.

It’s great that we’re finally getting another game with a 90%+ rating after such a long wait. I’m really excited about both of these new games – they look incredible, far beyond what we could have imagined 30 years ago. Now we just need to see if the gameplay lives up to the visuals and delivers a truly immersive and adventurous experience.
