The movie Tomb Raider, featuring Walton Goggins, is currently very popular on Netflix. 2025 could be considered a major year for Goggins’ career. He earned an Emmy nomination for his significant role in the third season of The White Lotus, where he played a vacationer haunted by his past.
Goggins ended the year by reprising his Emmy-nominated role as The Ghoul in season two of Fallout. Before that, years earlier, he appeared with Alicia Vikander in the 2018 film Tomb Raider.
Nearly ten years after its release, the movie Tomb Raider is performing very well on Netflix. It’s been near the top of the charts for several days, even reaching #2 in Denmark. As of December 26th, the video game adaptation is currently a Top 5 hit in countries like Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Ecuador, Finland, and Venezuela, and many more.
As much as I love a good adventure flick, I was bummed to find that the 2018 Tomb Raider isn’t currently on Netflix here in the States. Luckily, if you’re willing to watch a few ads, you can stream it for free on The Roku Channel! Otherwise, you can always buy or rent the digital version, or even grab a physical copy if you prefer.
Interest in Lara Croft is growing at the perfect time, not only because David Goggins is gaining more attention, but also because several adaptations are in the works. Prime Video is starting production on a live-action Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner (known from Game of Thrones), and Netflix recently concluded its second season of the anime series The Legend of Lara Croft, featuring Hayley Atwell (from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) as the voice of Lara Croft.
The movie Tomb Raider featured Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft and Walton Goggins as Mathias Vogel, an enemy of her father. Daniel Wu, Dominic West, and Kristin Scott Thomas also starred. With a budget of over $100 million, the film earned around $275 million globally – a similar amount to the 2001 Tomb Raider film starring Angelina Jolie.
While a follow-up to Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider film was considered, it didn’t happen, and the actress eventually moved on from the role. The film received mixed reviews, with scores around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing how challenging it is to adapt the Tomb Raider video game franchise for the big screen. However, it still has enough name recognition to warrant another chance on streaming platforms.
