Despite a report suggesting Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis could be delayed until February 2027, Electric Square, the support studio, has confirmed the game is still on track for a 2026 release. They are collaborating with Flying Wild Hog and Crystal Dynamics on the title, and announced this information via a post on LinkedIn.
I’m so excited! Electric Square just announced they helped Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog with the new Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis game. It’s a complete reimagining of the original Tomb Raider from 1996, and honestly, it looks incredible. The best part? It’s coming in 2026! I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with it.
News about the delay of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis to February 2027 first appeared on the Society of Raiders social media page – the same source that previously revealed the game was in development. Despite the delay, the game is still expected to launch sometime in 2026, which suggests a busy end of the year for gamers with major releases like Marvel’s Wolverine, Fable, and Grand Theft Auto 6 all on the horizon.
Scott Amos, head of Crystal Dynamics, and Will Kerslake, the game director, described Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis as a project created by fans, for fans – a true tribute to the series.
In a recent interview, Amos described Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis as a project created by fans, for fans. He explained that with the 30th anniversary approaching, the team wanted to create something special that both celebrated the milestone and honored the original spirit and design of the very first Tomb Raider game, which laid the foundation for everything the franchise has become over the last three decades.
We’re calling this a reimagining because we’ve rebuilt the entire game from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. We took the most important elements from the original game and asked ourselves how we could update them for today’s gamers. For example, areas that were once simple backgrounds are now fully realized, detailed 3D environments.
So, I’m really excited about Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis because it’s trying to retell the story of the first Tomb Raider for players today. The developers aren’t just giving us a simple remake though; they’re updating things like the controls and gameplay to feel more like modern action games. But don’t worry, they’re keeping what made the original great – you’ll still get those classic moments, like facing off against a T.Rex!
Along with the announcement of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a new Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, was revealed. Scheduled to launch in 2027, Catalyst will tell a fresh story with a more self-assured Lara Croft and bring back the iconic grappling hook.
Both titles are being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
