The release of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has been pushed to early 2027, in part to avoid competing with Grand Theft Auto 6, and also to allow for further development. It appears Crystal Dynamics is using this extra time effectively, particularly to refine the game’s difficulty settings, making them similar to those found in the Survivor Trilogy.
In an interview with GamesRadar at Summer Game Fest, game director Raul Siqueira explained that the biggest takeaway from the Survivor Trilogy was learning how to adjust difficulty to match what players expect. He noted that by the end of that series, they offered many ways for players to customize their experience. This is important for Tomb Raider because the game combines different elements—some players enjoy challenging puzzles but prefer easier combat, and the game should cater to those preferences.
In Legacy of Atlantis, players can adjust the difficulty to suit their preferences. The developers aimed to maintain this level of customization throughout the game’s development, and they’ll continue to fine-tune the balance right up until release.
Because of this, Siquiera wasn’t able to fully explore all the customization possibilities or compare it to a game like Shadow of the Tomb Raider. That 2018 game let players adjust combat, puzzles, and platforming with three separate sliders. It also had traditional difficulty settings, including a very challenging ‘Deadly Obsession’ mode that, once selected, couldn’t be changed.
The team plans to reveal more details later, but they’ve indicated this new feature will play much like similar modes in past games. If you enjoy a challenging, unassisted gameplay experience with little room for error, it’s something to watch for.
The new Tomb Raider game, Legacy of Atlantis, will be released on February 12, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
