Throughout its six seasons, Peaky Blinders transformed Tommy Shelby from a character into a legendary figure, thanks to the creative efforts of showrunner Steven Knight and actor Cillian Murphy, who both contributed to building the myth surrounding him.
Things aren’t expected to be any different with the new movie, The Immortal Man, which hits UK cinemas this Friday, March 6th, and will be available on Netflix two weeks after that.
At a recent Q&A event with Edith Bowman at the BFI, creator Steven Knight shared that Tommy Shelby will play a particularly significant role in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, which is set during World War II.
Knight explained to the audience, including those from TopMob, that the war is unfolding without Tommy Shelby’s involvement, but his very identity means it will inevitably shift course because of him.
I’ve always appreciated how the show incorporates real history, but this time, it feels like they’re going much further. Altering the outcome of the war would be a massive shift, dwarfing anything Tommy’s done before. Honestly, I’m on the edge of my seat to see what happens next!

Knight has shared that the film will tell a true story from the war that hasn’t been revealed before. He explained during a recent discussion that the story centers around Operation Bernhard, a plan by Nazi Germany to destabilize the UK by flooding it with fake money.
At the event, Murphy shared that the new film would allow him to explore his character’s origins even more, especially his connection to the world of Aunt Polly, who was memorably portrayed by the late Helen McCrory.
He really leaned into the kind of whimsical, free-spirited energy we often associated with his Aunt Polly, more so than ever before, according to the speaker.
I’ve noticed a big change in his thinking over the years. He used to be all about facts and understanding how things work, but now he really believes that the true meaning of life isn’t found in progress or science. He feels it’s actually in something much more fundamental – like a deeper connection to life itself, something beyond just what we can explain.
