Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s most popular character – he consistently outshines even other heroes boosted by the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His appeal spans all types of entertainment, and while his compelling personality, supporting characters, and storylines are major factors, his powers definitely contribute to that popularity. They’re easy to understand: Spider-Man is strong, flexible, can cling to surfaces, and has a ‘spider-sense’ warning him of danger. It’s a simple concept, but incredibly exciting.

Although Spider-Man’s basic powers have stayed consistent, they’ve definitely evolved over time. He’s gained – and lost – several abilities throughout the years. Today, we’re focusing on five superpowers Spider-Man once possessed but no longer uses. While Peter Parker already has all the abilities of a spider, these lost powers allowed him to do even more. Let’s take a look at the powers Spider-Man has left behind.

5) Organic Webbing

When Tobey Maguire first appeared as Spider-Man in theaters, Marvel decided to update their comic book version of Peter Parker to match. This led to a mystical change connecting Spider-Man to his ancestral animal spirit, granting him new abilities – most notably, the power to create unlimited webbing organically. Previously, Spider-Man relied on web-shooters that could run out of fluid. However, this organic webbing ability was later lost during the “Brand New Day” storyline, and because of changes in his internal connection, he hasn’t been able to regain it through that method.

4) Enhanced Spider-Sense

Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense is incredibly useful, but it recently became overloaded. A villain named Ty Stone attempted to disrupt the ability, and instead accidentally amplified it dramatically. This caused Peter Parker to be overwhelmed by every possible threat – even minor ones like small bumps or papercuts. He was hyperaware of everything around him, almost able to perceive time itself, but the sheer amount of information became too much to handle. Luckily, this extreme sensitivity didn’t last long.

3) Radio Signal Detection

I always find it fascinating learning about early Spider-Man! Did you know his Spider-Sense used to do so much more? Back in the very beginning, before Stan Lee and Steve Ditko really figured out Peter’s powers, the Spider-Sense could actually detect, hear, and even trace radio signals. It was a cool idea they experimented with, but it didn’t quite fit, so they dropped it after just a few issues. But honestly, I think its influence is still visible today – those little Spider-Tracers Peter uses? They were originally conceived as radios sending out a signal only his Spider-Sense could pick up! It’s amazing to see how these early concepts evolve.

2) Captain Universe Powers

The Enigma Force is a powerful, cosmic energy that seeks out individuals to help them defend life across the universe. It once selected Spider-Man, turning him into Captain Universe – an incredibly strong version of himself. While he had this power, Spider-Man was almost invincible and fiercely protected New York City. For instance, as Captain Universe, he could effortlessly send the Hulk flying into outer space! He easily defeated powerful enemies like Tri-Sentinel and Magneto without much difficulty. Many consider this to be Spider-Man’s greatest transformation and most potent ability.

1) Magic

It’s surprising, but there was a period when Spider-Man possessed magical abilities comparable to those of Doctor Strange. This happened while he was bonded with the symbiote and trapped in an alternate reality – the only way back home required him to learn magic and fix the world. The symbiote put Peter into a year-long study session with Doctor Strange! More recently, in the ‘8 Deaths of Spider-Man’ storyline, both Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange enhanced Spidey’s magical powers to defend Earth from an invasion. It appears Spider-Man has a natural aptitude for magic.
