Netflix has been increasingly investing in anime and video game adaptations, likely due to their growing popularity. The platform has already created many successful series based on video games, but choosing the best ones is tough. We’ve put together a ranked list of our top seven favorites, and you might be surprised by our picks!
7.) The Cuphead Show

It’s a shame The Cuphead Show isn’t more well-known, especially since it perfectly captures the spirit of the original video game. Beyond replicating the game’s distinctive cartoon style, the show also nails its quirky humor and unique visual approach. After releasing three seasons starting in 2022, Netflix hasn’t announced a fourth season, but fans of both gaming and animation are eager for Cuphead and Mugman to return. Regardless of whether it continues, the show has already proven itself to be a standout series.
6.) Splinter Cell: Deathwatch

I’m so excited to see Sam Fisher back in action! Netflix’s animated series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, is a really cool take on the classic video game. The first season dropped last October and immediately grabbed me with its story of an older, seasoned Sam getting pulled back into the spy game. And the best part? Netflix has already greenlit a second season! If they can keep the momentum going, this show could easily become one of my all-time favorites.
5.) Devil May Cry

I’m really excited about the Devil May Cry series on Netflix! Even though it’s not a direct continuation of the games, the showrunner, Adi Shankar, totally gets what makes Devil May Cry so awesome. Season one was a blast, with Dante battling demons and discovering that things aren’t always black and white. And the best part? Season two is coming out on May 12th! With no new Devil May Cry games announced for consoles or PC right now, it’s fantastic to see the story continue in such a cool way on Netflix.
4.) Castlevania: Nocturne

Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne is the follow-up to the popular animated series, and it centers on Richter Belmont. The story draws inspiration from the Castlevania video games, specifically blending elements from Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. While it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the first season, Nocturne offers a compelling story with plenty of action and heartfelt moments, further developing the world of Dracula and the Belmont family. It’s disappointing that a third season hasn’t been confirmed, as there’s still a wealth of content from the games that could be adapted, especially with a new Castlevania game on the way.
3.) Castlevania

Many consider Netflix’s Castlevania to be the best video game adaptation on the platform, and it paved the way for other adaptations that followed. While Nocturne is a good continuation of the story, the original Castlevania series still stands out due to its well-developed characters, exciting action, and compelling narrative. The show demonstrated Netflix’s ability to not only adapt video games successfully, but also to reimagine familiar worlds in a creative and faithful way. Castlevania had four seasons to tell the complete story of Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard, and fans hope Nocturne will also get the chance to fully develop its story over multiple seasons.
2.) Arcane

It might be surprising to some that Arcane isn’t at the very top of our list, considering how highly praised the League of Legendsbased animated series is and how much of a standout production it was for Netflix. The show, which centers on the stories of Vi and Jinx, delivered a captivating narrative with stunning computer-generated animation. The reason it didn’t reach number one comes down to the fact that its second season wasn’t quite as strong as the first. However, the overall quality of Arcane’s* story is still exceptional, earning it a high ranking on our list of video game adaptations.
1.) Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is arguably their best video game adaptation to date. The series, created by Studio TRIGGER, tells a complete and compelling story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It was so popular that it actually revitalized interest in Cyberpunk 2077, the video game that had a rough launch but benefited greatly from the anime’s release. With elements from Edgerunners now integrated into the game, the series stands out not only as a top-tier adaptation but as an excellent anime in its own right. We at egmr.ru gave the first season a perfect score, and we’re hoping the upcoming sequel will be just as impressive.
