We’ve seen anime and Western pop culture combine in fun ways before – like Deadpool fighting Thanos alongside All Might, or the Avengers teaming up with characters from Attack on Titan. Now, a major action movie is set to crossover with a classic mecha anime series that’s been popular since the 1980s.
Paramount and a famous anime series have joined forces to create a special collectible: the “VF-25 Messiah Valkyrie Top Gun: Maverick.” You can now pre-order this transforming model kit, which turns into a mech, and it’s expected to ship in September. Bandai Namco offers this description of the exciting collaboration:
I was really excited to see the collaboration between Macross and Top Gun: Maverick! They’ve released a VF-25 model designed to look like Maverick’s plane, complete with the same colors. It’s incredibly detailed – even the head of the Battroid mode incorporates design elements from Maverick’s helmet. The model comes with two display stands: one that lets you pose it in all three modes, and a special commemorative stand specifically for Fighter and GERWALK modes. You can check it out for yourself below!
Top Gun’s Future, Anime And Otherwise

I’ve been keeping an eye on the possibility of another Top Gun movie, and while Paramount hasn’t officially announced anything, it’s definitely not off the table. Tom Cruise actually discussed it last year during a TV interview. He talked about how much work went into making Top Gun: Maverick and hinted that they’re thinking about a third film. He said they don’t have a complete story yet, but it’s something they’re actively considering.
We’re exploring a lot of different story ideas and figuring out what’s possible. It took me 35 years to make Top Gun: Maverick, and we’re currently discussing ideas for films like Days of Thunder and another Top Gun movie, along with several other projects. I’m always either filming, preparing to film, or finishing a movie. I recently finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu, the director of The Revenant, which was amazing, and Christopher McQuarrie and I are constantly developing new films.
It’s funny, but Top Gun isn’t the first time Macross has crossed over with another big franchise. Just last year, they actually teamed up with the Transformers! They created a brand new robotic character, and even released a figure based on the collaboration. While Macross hasn’t quite reached the same popularity as Gundam, it’s clear the series is still going strong and finding new ways to connect with fans.
