Toy Story Co-Creator Opens Up About Franchise Future (& Isn’t Ruling Out More Sequels)

I’m so excited! Toy Story 5 comes out later this week, and early reviews are amazing – it sounds like the movie keeps up the high quality we’ve come to expect from the series. It got me thinking about whether they’ll make even more Toy Story movies after this one. Luckily, one of the creators of Toy Story 5 has said that future sequels aren’t off the table, which is fantastic news!

Speaking with ScreenRant, Toy Story 5’s Andrew Stanton hinted that a potential Toy Story 6 might focus on Bonnie’s experiences with the toys before they eventually move on to a new child. He explained that following Bonnie’s life and seeing how the toys fit into it has always been an idea he considered for future installments, suggesting this could be the direction of the series if it continues.

It felt like we were making each season as if it could be the last. We consistently crafted endings that offered closure, but also allowed for continuation. For example, at the end of Season 4, we transitioned the main role from Woody to Jessie, just in case the show was renewed. That cautious approach has always guided our creative decisions,” Stanton explained.

It’s Time To Stop The “Do We Need More Toy Story Sequels” Hot Takes

Though some questioned whether another Toy Story film was necessary after the third one, the announcement of the fourth and fifth movies sparked a lot of online debate. Toy Story 4 did well enough to quiet those discussions temporarily, but the announcement of Toy Story 5 brought the same old arguments right back to the surface.

After receiving a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 112 reviews, Toy Story 5 appears to be another fantastic addition to the beloved series. The film tackles a very current theme – how kids grow up with tablets and smartphones – making it relatable for both children and their parents.

It’s surprising to me that even after it was stated this would be the last film, some people still reacted negatively to another Toy Story sequel. This negativity also led to strange opinions about whether Toy Story 3 and 4 were necessary continuations of the story. Every Toy Story movie has always had a deeply emotional or impactful moment for me, and I expect Toy Story 5 will be no different. If the films continue to deliver that kind of powerful experience, I’m happy to see them make as many sequels as they want – even Toy Story 6, 7, and beyond!

Toy Story 5 lands in theaters on June 19, 2026.
